The problem there is that a lot of times you do want to pick up multiple of the same item at once. So doing that would make some parts less annoying while others more so. Bettercrates already forcing you to only being able to use the same type of crate combined with being able to cancel taking an item should honestly be enough to deal with most annoyances related to crates.
