I don't think Ashley will hold any weapons other than maybe a flashlight or a stick to stun enemies. I'd rather her not get in the way too much though.
I think Capcom knows how to use her in the game by now. If they're going to use her in that small section like in the original game where she had to fend off for herself hopefully she can use a melee weapon and the puzzles are better and there are a few more this time around.
