Is this two separate complaints? I don't think segmented TASs are an issue. TASs are also really helpful for discovering RTA tricks and routing.
TAS is the only acceptable form of speedrun
Segmented runs are pretty gay for records, but are cool in the sense of collaborations. HL in 20:41 is a good example of the latter. I much prefer single-segment runs, but I can appreciate the amount of time and effort that goes in to routing and perfecting a very specific part of a run, then linking it all together.
Wouldn't a segmented TAS just be a TAS?
Those are good for goal setting and optimization for sure.
Yes, which is why I was confused.
Some things behave differently if the game is restarted. Stuff like random seeds or things relating to ram consumption or runtime.
A run spliced together isnt the same as using savestates for a single segment.
Segmented isn't the same as disallowing resets. Some speedruns reset to skip certain animations(right after saving) and are still considered single segment.
meant to say single segment, not segmented
>Is this two separate complaints?
yes
>Half the game is spent out of bounds with some weird swimming in the air glitch
This is basically why Dark Souls series runs are so fucking terrible now.
>Oh is he gonna show off some cool tech or skillfully he defeat the bosses as quickly as possible?
>Nah he's just going to go out of bounds and walk under the entire map until he reaches the final area.
Theres a reason why glitchless is its own category
>4 player coop speedrun
>4 tiny screens
>dev on the phone
>"bet you didn't think we could do that!"
>when I was a kid used to think world- record speedrunners were these godly, super skilled gamers who practice for months for a single god-like run of a game
>find out a lot of times its just some guy who mindlessly "grinds" runs hours on end like a factory that only pumps out parental disappointment
It makes sense, but there's something very disappointing and lame about that process in which world records are done
>save
>quit to menu
>reload
>repeat 40 times
I'm not asking for glitchless, but reload bug speedrunning is some of the most boring shit.
Who the fuck cares about how it's done, the only thing that matters is result and how entertaining it is.

yeah, do this shit without tool assist
i dare you
No, some things aren’t the same as started from a point or skipping certain scenes
Also, collabs
Tool Assisted Speedruns are only recognized because enough babies cheated hard enough to make their own bracket.
Also this
>speedrunning
>ever
Look I know I'm throwing stones from a glass castle here but holy shit these autists pour thousands of hours into playing the same video games over and over again. What's even worse is that there are people who WATCH them play the same game over and over for thousands of hours.
Imagine if that was spent doing something useful.
TAS is the only respectable type of speedrun
I'm genuinely surprised the art of throwing a run or ruining it for the runner live hasn't cropped up more often.
>walk into a door in the first area and teleport to the credits
>Game has amazing and entertaining skill based route for years. Fun to watch.
>New glitch is discovered that cuts 90% of the game.
>Scene dies.
>bruteforce inputs faster than a human ever could to the point it overflows the cache
>wow guize look what I did
>waaah tas is cheating
Do you comment on youtube videos?
>Speedrunning
Everyone just moves on to "any% no new glitch"
>TAS video
>always see that one retard in the comments
>"you cheated this is fake!"
>Hacking into the credits is considered valid completion
