If anything my issue with Romero is his tendency to be overly dickish in map design.

If you're going to use the end-all be-all Doom asshole level designer, we both know the answer is American McGee. The issue with Sandy's maps is they were rushed because he was new to the company and they had to get the game out fairly quick.
