Tifa is the favorite of the remake, so she gets more romance with Cloud. Aerith specifically tells Cloud not to fall for her and that any feelings he has for her isn't real. She's practically shipping him with Tifa herself.

SE also clearly knows how popular Tifa is, which may have something to do with it. No one cares that much about Aerith by comparison.

I think the voice acting and the better graphics is making people think they're relationship was altered, when it was mostly the same.

It's not really about reverse psychology. It's that women themselves don't know what they're going to feel 5 minutes from now. That's where their illogicality comes from, being genuinely, absolutely sure of and convinced about A now, only to feel the same way about B later, and then C, over and over and over ad infinitum. It's not about playing mindgames as much as it's about having the emotional self-control of a child.

That said, whatever Aerith said or meant by it is anyone's guess. She's a written, artificial character and everything she says serves a purpose we don't yet see. Don't try to apply a real woman's personality on her, because it just doesn't work that way.
