One of the best games of the generation

>one of the best games of the generation
>most gamers ignore it or get filtered by it because they don't understand the concept of interacting with an animal

TLG > Ico = SotC

From an artistic perspective, maybe. The game did have a lot of technical problems though and Trico's AI was bugged at certain points in the game. I think the most frustrating points were in two places mostly. When I had to let Trico bring me down from a tree branch and the point in the game when you were in a cage and had to wait too long. Some of these sequences were protracted, I wish the developers paid more attention to these so gamers didn't feel like there was too much drag. The last part of the Citadel when you're flying back up to the tower should've been quicker too.

Besides all of that I think it would've made sense to have moments of tension include things like a health meter for Trico that way you'd be given reason to restore his health with the barrels. From the story's perspective you were essentially healing him to the point he could fly again but I think the health mechanic should've been in the game.

I think this could've been a better game easily but I liked it for what it was.

These gents know what they're talking about.

They're all amazing, that's what matters most
>The game did have a lot of technical problems though and Trico's AI was bugged at certain points in the game
It definitely had some rough spots, but the way certain detractors speak about it, it would lead you to believe the entire game is a broken mess which just isn't true. There was a fundamental misunderstanding between how the game worked and how certain people thought the game should work

>they don't understand the concept of interacting with an animal
it has shit A.I.

>t.never interacted with an animal

As much as people wailed about Trico's AI I only got stuck with him once on one jump.

>They're all amazing, that's what matters most
True, I forgot to mention that.

I got stuck with him in the pool, he would just swim on the spot. It happened in both my playthroughs.

It's because Trico's AI is actually fine most of the time, people just expected it to immediately do everything they said because they approached it like a game mechanic instead of an actual animal

I play games to have fun not to watch some wannabe arthouse shit

>I couldn't handle the part where I had to make Trico swim because I don't know how to train animals
Nah, it had great AI that did exactly what it was supposed to do. You're mad because you played wrong and it never wanted to listen to you.

For me it's Trico > Nico > Ico but that's because I got filtered by the map design in Ico. Never did beat it.

I played it, really unique.
Actually got stuck an emparrasingly long time in the tree after that one part where you fall off the creature.

>this game made dunkey put a dent into his wall
What about this game made retarded manchildren seeth? Controlling an animal isn't supposed to be easy

It has quite a few neat puzzles and cool environmental/level design along with some great setpiece moments. I don't really see what's boring about it

The game crashed when I tried to play it.

Might be artistic or whatever but it should also work.

This, FF7R, and FF15 are perfect examples of why Japan is no longer relevant in vidya. They can't churn games out in an acceptable dev cycle so the technology and graphics is all dated by the time it lands.

Lack of patience/instant gratification

>in the tree after that one part where you fall off the creature.

Same. It was ludo.

there are still people who think controlling the horse in sotc is bad, because they just want it to be a hairy motorcycle instead of an animal with its own sense of intuition

Looks like Dunkey.

This is the one that boggles me the most. You need to let Aggro do his thing in tight spaces with a bit of room for correction

I think it's a matter of striking a balance between reality and the game being a game. I think they got the controls for Aggro just right imo, I never had a problem with the horseback controls.

some people, whether you want to believe they're ignorant or just being reasonable, view video games in a very objective fashion. they believe if the camera isn't "working" or the way you control your player character is "bad" or that it's "broken", they'll dismiss it and call it a shit game. others have the patience to work with how a game controls and understand how maybe they can put aside what they think is "right" or "wrong" and enjoy a game for what it is.

I honestly liked SotC more than Ico because I hate escort missions. Especially game length ones even if it is otherwise amazing.

>controlling the horse in sotc is bad

Boggles my mind, I've never had an issue with Aggro. Now the climbing jank and Wander spontaneously falling off even though I've got plenty of stamina... that's pure fuckery, and FUCK the last two Colossi.

sotc is still better

>Now the climbing jank and Wander spontaneously falling off even though I've got plenty of stamina
Yeah, the climbing could be a little annoying. Funnily enough I never had an issue with the last Colossi. Colossi 15 can get fucked though

I'm not disagreeing because SotC is one of my all time favourites, but I think TLG is amazing as well

Almost cried at the end. Truly a underrated gem.

The game's story was cryptic like most games from the developer but I got enough info to assume a few things.

-The Trico is likely the guardian unless the boy happens to be one and if he is there's no way to know for sure unless the lore revealed another reason he was kidnapped. I assume he was taken for his higher than average spiritual energy as noted by the blue butterflies.

-The Trico were brainwashed into serving the Master through the substance. They were placed in the room below the room where the Master is situated and were fed a seemingly endless supply of barrels until they became dependent on it. The eye in the glass the creatures fear is the Master's eye unless there's supposed to be a spiritual connection in the way the Trico see a reflection of how they perceive themselves from the things they've done to obtain the substance.

-the Master is the last king from the civilization in the valley that succeeded in reaching near immortality through technology and consuming spiritual energy from the chosen children. I believe this because the shield you use to control the Citadel mechanism was found in the King's tomb. It only makes sense he is the Master.

-The Trico feed what they believe is their offspring unless the stone sculpture depicting a young bird is just symbolic for what they're doing. Otherwise they're aware they're serving the Master.

I think a staple of Ueda's games is the lack of, or lack of a need for, the hud elements. The remake of SotC lets you turn off the hud elements and really doesn't suffer on the harder difficulties where falling off is usually death (iirc). Ico doesn't have a hud and TLG's hud is so obnoxious and unnecessary with constant button prompts popping up on the screen. A health bar for Trico might also undermine the strength of the beasts storywise, you're playing the fragile boy getting escorted by an unkillable and threatening monster.

I had a thread the other week because I finally forced myself to beat it. The game was good and it's great to see a game that isn't a rehash AAA title. But it was a fucking chore to finish, tlg is a giant escort mission with clunky mechanics and shitty camera and took away from the experience in my honest opinion. Every time I was about to get a little more connected with trico the games janky mess ruined it. If this game was on ps3, as intended, I wouldn't be complaining as much but it's just inexcusable as a PS4 game.
