Maybe Nintendo just isn't the house to make Metroid anymore, maybe it's best left to the indies. Which is a shame, because I've played Momodora, Ori, Hollow Knight, Salt and Sanctuary and The Messenger, and while they're all great metroidvanias, nothing captures that atmospheric sense of dread like Metroid. It's not just in the music and the backgrounds. It's in the execution and the game balance.
I'm still absurdly pissed that people will eat up Zelda yet skip Metroid even despite overlap in their focus on exploration and puzzle-solving.
