7 is still my favourite but I'm perfectly fine with this. FFX is also a great game.

The one thing us FF7 and FFX chads can agree on is that FF9 was an abomination and a huge step backwards for the series.

8's story is dumb as shit, but for some reason the battling didn't feel nearly as tedious as it did in 9.

Nah, FF8 was the most ambitious game in the series. You have to at least give it credit for that much.

FF9 was stagnation personified. They pretty much just rehashed FF4 with shittier characters, a boring battle system, disgusting art style and the slowest battle system imaginable. There's a reason why it was the worst seller of the PS1 FF games.
