I played the games when they were first released, and I can tell you that games like Mania were bones thrown to people who were familiar with Sonic's initial outings, when the franchise was gold. Folks who were brought up with Adventure and the other 3D games tend to be upset about Mania aiming at a demographic that's not them, but believe me when I say that the reminder of what was good about Sonic the Video Game was needed.

Mega Collection was the only source of Sonic I had for a long time until I played Adventure on my cousin's dreamcast for the first time
To me, I liked the different playstyles (if you will), but I hated when nostalgia was thrown into the mix

I'm not denying they happened, but when nostalgia is constantly brought up, it's not nostalgia. Those handheld 2D games you mentioned were continuously made on handhelds, bringing something new and fresh that had the Pizazz sonic brought
I said it once, and I'll say it again: Bringing nostalgia to the series when it's unnecessary to ruins what Sonic is. And to further prove my point, if SEGA announced tomorrow that they were making a 2D sonic game that was the next step in the franchise that brought NEW MECHANICS and SOMETHING DIFFERENT, then that would be a new game
