Agreed. The shame of it is that the battle system in pokemon actually has a lot of depth, but it's wasted outside of PVPshit because there's no point in bothering when you can easily plow through all games by just sticking four offensive moves on all your pokes and going to town.

However there are romhacks that actually do make opponents use competent teams and strategies that will require you to actually put some thought into your own teambuilding and movesets.

Seconding, play Drayano's hacks. They give you access to a bunch of different Pokemon but also make the trainers much tougher. It's a different, tougher, satisfying experience.
