Nomura told us there would be huge story rewrites years ago. FF7 fans just went into stage one of loss, denying it would suck. And now that the game has come out, they're in stage two, anger. Soon they'll be stage three, bargaining. Where they'll try to explain away all the shitty changes and get hyped for the next episode. Only to repeat the process. FF fans love the abuse and never complete all the stages. I think they actually love getting angry.

This isn't a good analogy because a lot of directors also write the script. And even if they're not the original writer, directors often rewrite the script adding in camera cues and scene edits for visual direction (hence why it's called the directors script). It's also dumb because even if the director never writes anything, he still has creative input.
And furthermore, it's even more dumb because games are not produced like movies. Even though Final Fantasy tries their hardest to. But you're right that the majority of the blame should be put on Nojima. But Nomura also gets plenty of blame, since he hired Nojima for every game he does.

I was eating up all the dialogue from the datamine leak but never saw a single line from the ending. All that was ever said was that Jenova was found to be the final boss instead of Motor Ball. The big thing people were focusing on at the time was the Shinra blowing up their own reactor thing. In fact I don't recall dataminers mentioning the ghosts at all.
