I think emulation is ok for games older than 5 years old. I judge people negatively if they "emulate" games younger than that. And if the game is less than a year ago, it is piracy and should be punished like a crime.

I emulate because it's easier than setting up my old systems with a framemeister, or digging up a CRT just to play it. I don't care that much, I just want to play a JRPG every now and then. I want to replay kirby superstar, I want to replay SMW. Why should I have to go through 80 fucking steps just to play it? I don't care. I will emulate as long as it's easier, more accessible, and more importantly, cheaper. SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. Fuck right off with your $100 majuuou carts.

Well I'm not going to waste time and money on ebay for ps2's and gamecubes and whatever games exclusive to those consoles at inflated prices and potentially damaged media (scratched discs). The only time I buy games is when I know the developer is getting a cut, and that doesn't happen with older, used games.
True, $60 isn't much to these companies. But when a 10 million of you pirate (which is a realistic number for a game that sells 5 million), that's $600 million dollars and yes the company hurts from losing that much.

If games are a service, and the service you are entitled to is no longer being provided despite having been paid for, then emulation is fine.

Even today they don't get a cut, it is the publisher, you think they get a bonus? think again, it needs a high score in big publications and even then there is no guarantee of more work, Visceral games was shut down despite having a good track record because EA needed to increase their bottom line.

I think you're all looking at this the wrong way around.
You're making the assumption that video games have a default 'state' of being available for a certain price. You're then viewing the limiting of said state by the means of DRM, online activation, licensing, etc., as an infringement on the rights of the consumer to own a full and complete product.
In reality, it's the other way around.
The default state is that there are no video games. People don't want them, they don't know they want them, or the technology isn't there. Entrepreneurs then decide to make games, and consumers decide to buy them. The developers offer a product with the expectation that it will fill the demand, and a consumer can then make the choice to either buy or not buy it in the state that it's offered to them, be it with or without DRM, with or without on-disc DLC, for $100 or for free.
The desire to profit from making video games isn't what destroys games; it's what gets games made. Developers have to pour quite a bit of resources and man hours to create a product, as do publishers to market and distribute it.
If you don't want to buy a game in the state that it's offered in, you have every right to take your money elsewhere. Just recognize that if it weren't for the profit-driven parties, it wouldn't get made in a cheaper, better, 'purer' state; instead, it wouldn't get made at all.
