The N64 has the worst library of any mainstream console. Is it only popular because of nostalgia?

The Wii U says hi.

Yes, The library is so small that N64babbies need to pretend games like Majora's Mask and the rare collectathons are masterpieces or admit they fucked up by not having mom buy them a Playstation

Also this though

It's not the worst library, but it's very small.
The worst would be Saturn or Dreamcast.

Sony released their Playstation Classic. It was in bargain bins on DAY ONE.

If Nintendo announced an N64 Classic today, preorders would sell out immediately and it would be selling for thousands of dollars on Ebay.

True
But the playstation classic was missing a lot of the top selling games

The wealth of critically-acclaimed 2D fighters on Saturn and Dreamcast alone put them well above the 64. Albeit a lot of good on the Saturn's end is JP only.

>But the playstation classic was missing a lot of the top selling games
To be fair, an N64 classic would be too. It would be in bargain bins too.

No, it had the worst (next to Wii U) third party support, but it is well-remembered because the best of its library were cutting-edge either for presentation, game design, or visuals. You'd have to be a hardcore drone to try denying this.

So you're saying the N64 Classic would sell more because it would have a better library? Thanks for clearing that up.

thats because nintendo would produce only thousand untis and then cancel it like the nes classic

n64 games all ran at 20 fps
thats not a game, thats not even a movie

best gameplay of that generation

>Banjo-Kazooie
>Conker
>Goldeneye
>Perfect Dark
>KI Gold
Those are just a few of the heavy hitters they couldn't put on a 64 classic now that MS owns the IPs. Goldeneye is an especially weird one, since it's Nintendo's fault MS couldn't release an updated port to 360 years ago.

The only top-sellers the 64 would be missing is Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Banjo-Kazooie (and even with the last two, I'm sure MS would cut a deal with them to allow it's use).

Low framerates were common on '90s console hardware. PS games suffered from the same issue if they did anything beyond a pre-rendered backgrounds.

Nincel cope

>it is well-remembered because the best of its library were cutting-edge either for presentation, game design, or visuals
Yet most of them don't hold up as well as they say. There are better Zeldas than OoT/MM, There are better Marios than 64. The only N64 game that's still the best in its franchise is SF64

The N64 leaned pretty heavily on party game multiplayer so there’s not a whole lot of single player stuff worth revisiting.

>n64 games all ran at 20 fps
and PS1 didn't?

When you iterate, this is an inevitable outcome. You say this like it's a dig on the achievements of the N64 games.

No but they're blown out of proportion to over compensate for the system's lacking library. In virtually all Nintendo franchises, there is no entry that fans are more defensive of than the N64 version.

I think that the small library of games that the N64 have are sufficient and it has some classics. I couldn't imagine a world without Banjo Kazooie.

>n64 games all ran at 20 fps
Was fps elitism even a thing back then?

Gamecube is worse. N64 at least had:
A Kirby game
A Non-gimmick Donkey Kong game
Lots of good racing games
Rare

Not really, but there was an expectation that arcade games should run at 60 FPS, and that a home port of an arcade game wasn't good unless it ran at the same framerate.

>n64 games all ran at 20 fps
yall niggas forgot about starfox 64. not including the multiplayer mode which isn't even worth it anyway.

Yeah. The only way to circumvent this was with cheeky techniques, like in SH, where the fog and darkness cover the not-rendered areas of the map.

quality > quantity

>Lots of good racing games
Diddy Kong Racing is still one of my faves. so good.

Every fucking day we have a new thread whining about the N64

If we don't include ports that came way after the Wii U

>Breath of the Wild (dual release)
>Bayonetta 2
>Hyrule Warriors
>DK Tropical Freeze
>Xenoblade Chronicles X

And that's not including the amazing virtual console that has shit like Xenoblade Chronicals and the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Sure those aren't exclusives, but they are part of that amazing shop. Honestly the virtual console makes the console worth a buy on it's own.

it really rustles the jimmies of sonyfriends that the ps1 outsold the n64 but the n64 had a greater influence on game design in subsequent generations

all they can then do is whine that ps1 clones of n64 games that came out years later (see spyro of mario 64, or CTR of diddy kong racing) weren't that bad even though they were completely forgotten until the kiddies who grew up with them (born 1995+) started posting on Yas Forums

Because those games made a huge and lasting impact on the industry. I understand not like the games, but you don't have to deny their accomplishments.

Came for this

No the fuck it doesn't when emulators exist.
Wii U's VC was trash compared to Wii's VC too. Can't even get 240p output.
