I never beat it as a kid but looking up walkthroughs it seems easy enough. Was it actually difficult or was I just a scrub?

That desert in Rayman 3 really fucked with me. Must've had like 5 saves up until that part because I could'nt handel those guys following me all the time.

As a kid the timesplitter 1 zombie level spooked me the fuck out.
Especially when I realized that I could only kill zombies with headshots and had limited ammo.

Runner-up is this fish eating you in Mario 64. When you enter the big version of this level, many enemies are a threat, but the fish in particular can instantly swallow you and kill you. I imagine death takes a while due to digestive juices.

I really do not like the idea of underwater creature eating me while I swim. It's not just Dopefish, as a kid I was panicky of all big water enemies in almost all games.

But here's the worst one. Mario dying from nerve gas, causing his body to stiffen.
It was easy, but if you're a kid the threat of monster ock is really distracting. Also, when he catches you it sounds like Spiderman screams as he's getting torn apart. Later I realized the screams were from the monster.

Oh wow same. I even had a few nightmares of the hybrid mutant zombies where I would try and "pause" the game but they kept moving around.
