Remake is already a very well established word in the video game industry for a long time ago, which means:
Remake = Same story with graphics remade from scratch. (Example, Resident Evil 1 for GameCube, Ps4, etc)
FFVIIR has a new story, so it can't be considered remake.

What about hundreds of other titles where they also blatantly lied in your face. Not necessarily as a remake but take watch dogs, witcher 3, uncharted 4 and other similar titles where the graphics were completely different from the original footage. It figures that the internet and Yas Forums in particular has no shortage of people bitching and moaning about this 5-star, 10/10, masterpiece of a game, the first amazing AAA game in over a decade - all because the devs decided it would be lame if they were forced to re-tell the same exact story all over again, so they went to great lengths to include a sub-plot about the gang literally visiting the timelord dimension to tell destiny to fuck off and let the devs come up with changes to the plot. Like the retcon itself is a big sub-plot instead of brushed off. And still you bitch and moan and cry because it's just not the same and not being the same is automatically very bad.
