I can see it happening. It'd probably be one of the better things they can do since it'd achieve something similar to what Aeris' death did in the original and spur Cloud and Co to dig deeper into a "change the timeline" plot.

It'd be a bit weird to have Tifa stabbed the same way twice though, especially since she was just fine after the first time.

The player will have choice on who dies/is saved and their will be to diverging plots representing the two time lines. The ending will be reuninving these timelines to bring both of them back.
