it uses the original game and the assumption that you've played it as a basis while providing enough context and setting foundation that you'll still be able to follow the story even if you're completely new. the writing's silly (all final fantasy games have silly writing, the original game had silly writing) but the whispers as a force aren't considerably out-of-place compared to the rest of the setting and they provide a direct and to-the-point reason for the remake's changes and why it isn't following and won't follow the original game's story. "you're unfamiliar with basic writing tenets to think this is any good" is a shitty cop-out dressing up personal grievances as objective and fundamental problems to the work itself
