You don't have to look at computer games in just 2D or 3D. They can have non euclidian geometry and really fucked up space. You can make rooms with 4 walls but only 3 corners as well as looping corridors or in this case a looping world. The most common way is camera projection + teleport.
Imagine as baving a hard wall on one side and everything beyond that is just the live feed of the other side. But the other side also has a live feed of the one you are on. So when you teleport you have the illusion of them being seemlessly connected.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough. I'm aware of the teleporting and apparent seemlessness. Now consider this situation:
You generate a minecraft world and teleport to an edge of the map. Then you teleport to the other edge of the map. One edge is a tundra, while the other is simply an ocean.
Now, you could program a mod that does what you say. Make the edges have a live feed of the other side. But then you would have a tundra abruptly cutting into a vast ocean.
My question is how they handle the world generation itself so that it CAN loop without looking extremely out of place
