It can go both ways. Remake Sephiroth is trying to bait Cloud into saving her. Either they find out it's a trick and they let her die (would be very weird to just let her die like that though) OR they save her when she should've died in the original (very likely).
Either way, Aerith will die at the end of the Remake series, that's almost a given.

Why didn't time ghosts swoop in make sure her name named her Aeris instead of Aerith?

Because they needed to ramp up Aerith so you like her, even if you initially didn't in the original. It's because they are more than likely going to keep her "alive" until the very end of the game and then hit you with the "she has to sacrifice herself for everyone to live" card so you feel like shit, just like in the good old days. The move will make people talk about it more, and boost sales due to free publicity.

I hope the reason they made Aerith so likeable is so it will hurt that much more to fans when she dies (again).
Also to give more reason for Cloud to choose here over the obviously sexier Tifa.

That's her Character she's demure and the typical shy girl type though she puts on an outgoing act and most of what she's feeling she keeps it all bottled up until later in the game when all those things pour out. Aerith follows the genki girl trope. Plus Tifa suffers from trauma and shit same with Cloud but tamer in comparison.
