My experience of the FGC has been positive. Communities for particular games except SF and Tekken can't really afford to be assholes and are generally very glad to help newbies as it grows their community. I suspect you don't actually go to locals and are a poser like I described making excuses not to go.

personally, i also would rather interact with people like they were NPCs whose sole purpose is to give me matches. online play basically reduces them to that.

I used to play Pokken in a small community and there was one guy who went fuckin mental once or twice when I was there, genuinely unsettling. Plus he was always super tense even when winning so you could never tell if a loss would set him off. Decent community otherwise though.

I know it's a meme but they genuinely don't wash and have a very high ratio of people with proper autism or are just crazy. I can understand avoiding those. I didn't see the same thing to anything like the same extent in the FGC though.

Depends on the room but you're unlikely to get very good players. You'll get competent people pretty commonly though. You shouldn't shy away from losing when you're learning anyway.

This. You have to learn to not let yourself get salty and recognize shit so you can adapt. My best friend used to get really mad when we played fighting games and he would lose, once he stopped doing that he far surpassed me in skill.

RTS has harder mechanics but unironically easier strategy and tactics than fighting games. The hardest part in an RTS is to stop being slow and wasting time and resources. The hardest part in a fighting game is figuring out how to actually get a hit.
