Not strictly "racing" but Outrun Coast2Coast is kino. If it really has to be a race though then I'd suggest Micro Maniacs or Motorstorm Pacific Rift - they're both great.

I never played it really. But intriqued by it.
I tried a demo for 1 or 2 and it had the most obnoxious music and radio djs yelling about and the whole epic festival setting felt so corporate it made me uneasy.
Later titles looked kind of interesting, but i'm afraid the open world nature makes actual precise cutting of corners not so important as opposed to steamrolling your 9000 hp car through trees and terrain directly to the end goal.
I played FUEL years ago and while i liked the idea that did dip the experience a bit. The limits of level/trackdesign to the player is what makes interacting with it interesting. Large empty square miles don't.
I love car customization too, I think it had some of that?

1 is an incredible game and easily one of the best in 7th gen, there is no other game to pin down that atmosphere. I'm disappointed it never got a pc port
2 was a disappointment
3 was a good game as well but I disliked how it took a shit all over the progression
I didn't get to finish 4 but I disliked all the added stuff in the roulettes and the incredible amount of dlc, but at least the performance was far better than 3. 3 ran like absolute garbage on pc

Pic related is probably the best racing game ever made. The later games that changed from this formula to pursue the Fast and Furious audience completely miss what arcadey fun is supposed to be like.
