Better yet, retcon him entirely. Not only is his backstory bloated bullshit, he also has a fuckton of random-ass Chaos powers like hand blasts and spacetime warping AND super speed, while everyone else has one superpower and is otherwise reasonably athletic. Either get rid of him entirely, or nerf him and nerf him hard.

The problem with shadow isn't just that he's edgy. He's cheap, shallow, cliche and lacks self awareness, there's a reason why shadow and aventure fans hate that term so much, it's because they liked him as a kid. Everything about him has been done by other characters better but he is the perfect case of "autistic kids will like this because he's edgy". Gamma already did the self sacrifice in a way that was sincere and made sense, people dont make fun of shadow's sacrifice because "it's a kid's game", it's because it wasn't genuine and was a mellow dramatic shitty moment that put Adventure 2's cool story on a screeching halt with a ridiculous tragic back story. Gamma did every bit of that in an original and better way, on top of that stayed dead but shadow came back as a main character in the next game. Knuckles did the friendly rival thing better, he was also a stoic character who had been manipulated to hate sonic, the two have been at it before but over the years after understanding each other, they've come to not just like each other but also enjoy friendly sparring, Shadow's rivalry with Sonic is that he looks like him and is also fast, the two have never really had any development with one another, so they just decide Shadow is going to take knuckles role for now on, and now knuckles isn't really the same character anymore because Shadow now acts like he used to. Last is Metal Sonic was already the "edgy" rival to Sonic, Metal has an intimidating design in a way that fits a cartoony but serious aesthetic, he's a heartless machine that resembles the character we like, and we almost feel sorry for it, Shadow looks like the protagonist, but is black and red and has fangs sometimes, they even give him realistic fire arms, you can see his big mickey mouse gloves hold a assault rifle and we're supposed to take it seriously.

I do like shadow but he is a bad character.

Shadow is only a rival in SA2 (where it makes sense due to the story) and post-Colors. In Heroes and 06, he’s doing his own thing separate from Sonic, and I feel like that suits him a lot more. And I’d say he’s genuine, his creator, Shiro Maekawa, said that he cares about Shadow more than some of his close family members. Shadow’s game was a mistake and ruined his image for a lot of people. He’s not supposed to be a gun-toting, foul mouthed violent asshole, he’s soft spoken and pure, but has an unwavering sense of justice and a bit of an ego.

I believe he has been done better, I think 06 of all things actually made him to be a better character, but that Maria shit will always be stupid to me, again not because it's a kids game it's because its absurd, I say this because drama and sad moments do deserve to be in kids stuff, Gamma was genuinely a thought provoking tragedy, being an animal trapped inside of a robot, he saves his own brothers by their own destruction, I also like how as the story goes on, his brothers appearances look more monstrous, like how one of them is just a tower at one point
