Wii U

Wii U was the best 8th gen console but sold the worst.
Even at the time:
Best controller
Best stick placement
Light weight, quiet, low energy consumption
Free online
Best Web browser at the time
Best Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon apps at the time
100% backwards compatability with previous gen
Gamepad controls your TV
Nice discs with curved edges
Miiverse
BotW (game of the generation)
Virtual Wii is hackable so Sega/Atari/Arcade/PCE/Nintendo classics
Best exclusives
Third party games usually had exclusive gimmicks to make that version unique

Currently in 9th gen we only have the Switch and has outsold the Wii U in such a short time.

When will the Switch finally get a Dr. Mario game?

People liked to shit on the gamepad for being a brick but I found it to be really comfortable.

even nintendo didnt want to put games on this thing, the first party offerings are abysmal even compared to the gamecube

>t. Dumbass or never played the Wii U
Half of the Switch library are Wii U games.

Discovering this thing after its hayday is so frustrating.

It had a lot of potential and some very nice games, but it didn't make money, so Nintendo stopped making games for it. Not even for the Virtual Console, which SHOULD have been Nintendo's best, but is only now being realized through modding.

>we will never get a Wii U 2
But why?

>Best controller
>Light weight, quiet, low energy consumption
Hope you're not talking about the Pad, because that ran out of juice incredibly fast and was a real pain to charge all the time. It was clunky as hell to hold, too, and the screen was rarely used to much effect.

>Nice discs with curved edges
????

It was fucking trash. An overpriced overclocked xbox 360 with 32gb of storage max, 1 good game at very best per year, total lack of basic online infrastructure and the worthwile features removed after a short time.

It's only worth owning now that you can pirate it and download games straight from Nintendo servers, but it was actually terrible to own back then.

>It's only worth owning now that you can pirate it and download games straight from Nintendo servers
Haven't they shut this down now, though? (If it's back up, I might actually dust off my WiiU again).

You can still download them with WiiU USB Helper.

>It was clunky as hell to hold, too
You never actually held one.

Man I wish the Wii U's finish was good enough to look like that long term
Mine has been scratched to shit for as long as I can remember. Fuckin thing was tossed in a backpack maybe a handful of times, and everyone I know has their wii u looking like that too. Cheap ass finish, seemed Nintendo just loved to do that during that era, tons of the 3ds models sans the 2ds and the original 3ds had finishes that came off damn easy

>>Nice discs with curved edges
>????
>people who have never used Wii Us are shitting on it
Every time
The Wii U has curved edges on their discs. They are very nice to handle.

>Fuckin thing was tossed in a backpack
>why is it all scratched up
Yas Forums is retarded

They marketed this thing so fucking poorly that it makes me wonder what the fuck they were thinking. Giving it another name would have helped a lot.

The Switch on the other hand, has one of the best marketing campaigns of a video game console I've seen.

Nah. I bought a Wii U because I constantly heard it was the best supplementary console to PC because it had "all the fun, innovative console exclusives," but the whole damn thing is such a fuck up.

Most exclusives were boring as sin. 3D World wasn't engaging enough to be fun even with friends up until the special worlds, and Mario Kart 8 was gimped with its shit excuse for a battle mode. Splatoon and BOTW were pretty fun, but both were quickly eclipsed within a year each by a slew of great shooters on PC for the former and stable 60FPS enhancements in emulation for the latter. There were still a few titles here and there that were ok, like W101, ZombiU, and NG3: Razor's Edge, but they weren't enough to be killer apps.

Even just the console by itself was deeply flawed. The gamepad was a piece of shit that constantly had to be charged and was unwieldy as fuck for gyro because it was a goddamn tablet; not to mention the secondhand market and general posterity for the console are fucked because you need the goddamn thing to set up the console in the conventional way. It's a bigger timebomb than the Xbox's clock capacitors and was basically an extra $100 fee when I bought mine refurbished. Then there's the whole deal with the hardware inside the console being dogshite, gimping it from doing much more than the 7th Gen and giving you as little built-in storage space as a $10 SD Card (and that was the goddamn DELUXE version).

The only long-term use I had for the thing was that the gamepad fit more nicely under my main computer monitor than my normal tablet, so it was better for watching Netflix on while grinding for Warframe

>Most exclusives were boring as sin.
Stopped reading there.
Why does the Wii U make these posters seethe this much?

Because the only notable thing about this piece of shit is how fast it collects dust even in a sealed box

For me it's the Wii U!

>Was always full of tripfags shitting up /vg/ obsessively
>Had one of the worst /vg/ discords by a mile
>Couldn't even be bothered to finish your pic related, gave up on the console faster than Nintendo did
/nintyg/ was a mistake

Still can't tell if I'm being baited... Were the disks meant to be square or something?

You know how cds and dvds and blu rays got that rough edge where they cut the disc to make it round?
Well, the wii u discs had a layer of protective coating applied, that covers the spot where it was cut during manufacturing. Instead of being rough, its extremely satisfyingly smooth and curved.
It's a nice thing but I dont know why user brought it up, its extremely minute.

WTF the Gamecube is pretty much universally agreed to be Nintendo's best console with the best games

On what planet? Melee fags spout that lie sure but literally nobody else falls for it. It was a rushed console, most games had significant rushes or development hells, cutting shitloads of content because from the n64 up until the Wii Nintendo could NOT get their shit together for five fuckin minutes

Wii U was a work of art. Switch is just a Wii U for normies.

Gamecube clearly had the best lineup but N64s few titles had bigger impact.

BASED

It's hard to explain without you touching them but Wii U discs have their edges rounded. All other optical disc media ever made has flat edges that are somewhat rough to the touch. Not talking about the top of the disc with the label or the bottom with the data. The outer edge of the disc.

Hacked Wii-U is fucking kino

>Region lock
>That abhorrent release scheduling
>That twilight year or two where we got shit like Amiibo Festival, Color Splash, Mario Ultra Tennis, games with 0 effort put in
>One of the most harshly censored eras of Nintendo
>SMT x FE being teased as a serious, quality combo but ending up as fucking IDOLSHIT
>Best game on the system isn't even exclusive
>Even Nintendo had no solid idea of what to do with the Gamepad despite making it. Closest they came to utilizing it and justifying its fucking existence was minigame collections.
>Was barely even on par with last gen hardware, the fact it had to push video to the gamepad further made the weak hardware a difficulty
>Full of abandoned features Nintendo half assed like Nintendo TVii
>Had no good titles for quite a long time after launch
It was an embarassment of a console with a handful of decent titles.

The marketing was bad, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the console. After all, Dreamcast and Vita sold like shit but people like them. So why can't Wii U?

Have there been any other consoles that bombed almost exclusively because of a terrible name and the marketing team dropping the ball? I know a lot of people, personally and from what I've read online, didn't understand it was a new console and thought it was an accessory to the original Wii and skipped it for that reason.

Why did the Wii U have so much soul? It looked and felt like a game console. I love my switch but it took the awful minimalist route Sony and Microsoft took.

I'm still baffled such an effective pirating system was allowed. It's great, though I have to say I no longer have the time/motivation to replay games I played years ago.

No.

>It looked and felt like a game console
Because that's the point of video games. Going from Wii U to Switch was a shock because of how plain the Switch UI is. But later I understood that it is the 3DS UI designers making the fastest, no bullshit menu. Even the eshop is more streamlined than the 3DS and Wii U eshops.

yeah and there's no eshop music which sucks.

>Virtual console games on it applied an anti seizure filter that totally ruined it by making the image WAY too dark and soft
>Took forever to get an actual flagship Mario, when it did it was a mediocre 3d linear one like 3d land, with the added downside of levels being fuckhuge empty to accomodate the multiplayer
>Tons of the things originally teased in the initial e3 presentation either took ages to come out like Art Academy and Wii Sports HD, or never materialized (the tablet gun adapter)
>Started the amiibo nightmare, a half baked idea no game made good use of, at best a cosmetic change like Mario Maker, at worse unnecessary physical DLC (that you werent able to find anywhere cause Nintendo refused to produce enough to meet demand)
>Had no hard drive, had to get an external to even download things like Xenoblade X that were too big for even the higher end models puny 32gb internal storage
>Tablet had tons of hardware issues, ESPECIALLY the rumble motor, which I've known many people who say "it had that?" cause theirs have been broken for so long
>Had the worst marketing of any Nintendo console
>Had a SINGLE (1) console variant, the Zelda one, which merely added a bit of color to the gamepad
What a shitshow

Wii U prices will skyrocket in the collectors market after this upcoming recession ends
It will end up a lot like the Dreamcast where it had interesting versions of many third party titles and many exclusives that never jumped the boat to other consoles

>3DS eshop gets several different eshop songs
>Switch gets none at all
What happened?

>hack 3ds
>dont play it
>hack wii u
>dont play it

>FF to 2020
>lockdown has me interested in these consoles again
>playing New Leaf because I refuse to buy another nintendo console after what they did to wiiu owners
>having a boatload of fun

Shame. I bet the Switch is fun.
