I like oder males in games too but boy protagonists are probably popular because they are associated with potential.
When you are young and all roads are there, open for you, pick one you want and go there.
When you play an older character he is more likely to have his own path to follow already, he's established character with some story to him already meanwhile when you play as the boy the adventures, the major events of his life are yet to come.
Also because being adult sucks with its responsibilities and duties and we all just have this sort of nostalgia for those days when we could afford to be carefree.
