V-X are all masterpieces, and there's a valid argument for each of them as "greatest". Everything before is dated and/or done better in later entries, and everything after was a trainwreck except for maybe XII. I hated it but it had it's merits.
That being said, IX edges out X for me.
I'm also finally playing VIII for the first time and just got to the moment on disc 3 when Eyes on Me plays. The story seems to walk a fine line between utmost kino and being nonsensical, so I'm interested to see how it ultimately plays out.

I think it has the best art direction, most fleshed out world, and best music in the series. The battle system is also really fast and fun, which was nice after how slow IX was.

The ruins meaning Zanarkand ruins? That's like at 80% of the games story completion. Although I do love that game it's one of my favorites and easily a 10/10 for me. And no it wasnt my first FF or jrpg.
