Who the fuck is sephiroth?
They add this random villain and give him not backstory he just hates the planet or something.
Is this something you needed to play the og for?

yes "Remake" is a pseudo-sequel to OG FF7. They probably just assumed everyone in the world had already played OG which is probably a safe assumption.
Have some nuts
Spoiler time
Biologically the son of two scientists, who got amplified with Jenova cells by his father and now he believes as an adult he needs to destroy the planet for Jenova who he considers his mom. He wants to turn it into a moving planet to consume other planets' species like Jenova did and to do that he needs black materia to create a giant as fuck meteor to slam it into Gaia, which is the planet. The reason he loves to mind torture Cloud though I can't still understand it, is it just because he is an obstacle in his way even though both were SOLDIERs? Also he never even knew he got amplified with Jenova cells until an assault on Cloud's home village Nibelheim where he discovered this and burned the entire place to the ground
In the original you're not supposed to see him at all in midgar
You just see his sword impaled on president shinra at the very end, and it's not until the end of cd1 that you finaly meet him for the first time
In the remake you see him in the first 45 minutes of the game and he throws buildings at you at the end
Sephiroth is so 2000 but
>we will have a new age of kids dicksucking Sephiroth
Based Nomura
thats how hes presented in the original too, its just that you get to know more about him as the game goes along. hes not a well written character in either
All this was just done so people stop theorizing about Jenova being in charge all along, because square hates for their ambiguos stories to have multiple interpretations.
In the OG game, all we really know about Seph is that he was a war hero that went insane after learning about his origins. He is also an experiment using the cells of a planet devouring alien able to influence and mind control people.
All that is no longer relevant in the remake.
Play part 2 for flashback
And adding to that: Sephirot didn't give a damn about Cloud in the original. All that was happening was "the reunion" the merging of Jenova cells, all in one place.
He influenced and manipulated Cloud using those cells, but there really wasn't this entire super duel of fates between them. Sephi wasn't obsesed with him at all, and they never have a real duel in the entire game.
Only at the end of the game, Cloud has this kind of ayahuasca trip on the lifestream, where he finally gets rid of his influence in a sort of mind plane.
Cloud brings aerith to him. Sephiroth needs someone to control because he's locked in a crystal prison remember? And because cloud is literally a puppet sephiroth has the ability to mind control cloud because of clouds mako infusion and sephiroth being an ancient who can manipulate the life stream.
the reason Sephiroth cares about Cloud in the Remake is he has knowledge of the future and knows that this puppet is the key to foiling his plans
Why his backstory is not relevant in the remake? Havent played yet
NTA but it's not irrelevant. Sephiroth knows the future but that doesn't make his background irrelevant.
The first time you get to the North Crater, Sephiroth fucks with Cloud seriously hard to break him, as he was the only member of the Reunion who wasn't there solely to advance Sephiroth's plans, and that required specific attention to resolve.
And that's it. A perfectly logical explanation to fuck with someone and not any kind of obsession over him, but it's unfair to say Sephiroth didn't give a damn about him- he certainly got special treatment in that moment.
Sephiroth is not an ancient
You don't learn shit about him in the original game either, don't worry about it, and don't listen to anyone who says otherwise, FF7 has always been threadbare when it came to characters and story.
I think what fucks me up the most right now is that the Sephiroth we deal with in Remake is from the future meaning we technically have two Sephiroths in the current timeline, or should at least, so I wonder how they're going to traverse this in the next installment
I imagine old Sephiroth will kill nuphiroth in order to establish to the party how much of a threat he is.
Dont feel bad, you spent time in Midgar going "this guy is bad, but why?"
In the original we spent Midgar going "why is this guy bad?"
We both leave Midgar scratching our head asking "what is the point?"
I'd be cool with that
this game needed kalm and junon dammit
yes he is in the first, whats not good written about him?
>Present Sephiroth joins the party
This is the future you chose.
Yea he is. It's why he can summon meteor.
In the next game Sephiroth IS Cloud. Hojo dredged Sephiroth from the reactor and injected his mako into Cloud before shipping him to the north pole to test his reunion theory
Count it
kys ignoramus
Sephiroth only thinks he's a Cetra because the original Shinra Scientists believed Jenova to be a mummified ancient. Once he found out they had injected her cells into him and made him the monster he is, he started considering her his mother. By that line of logic, he starting thinking he was some pseudo-cetra. But Jenova never was a Cetra, and neither was Sephiroth. Sephiroth is just nuts.
And if we add AC to the mix, the only thing that kept him together in the lifestream after the end of FFVII was his hatred of Cloud for foiling his plan. So not only does he know Cloud will ruin everything, he really, really fucking hates him for it.
he is able to summon meteor because of the mako in the crater but he is not an ancient, he thought he was an ancient cause the scientists thought jenova was an ancient but she's not
You either watched a let's play and took someone else's retarded opinion as your own or you've never played it and are just spouting what you think you know.
Wait for the whole game. I'm sure they'll explain it eventually.
jenova landed in a meteor, then there's the second meteor, does that mean that there's another jenova inside the meteor?
>Square Enix ruins Deus Ex with their Jewish business strategy
>Turn their flagship franchise into conspiracy theory illuminati ghosts dragged out with sequels that may never even be released
Why the FUCK does anybody buy games from this company?
this is wrong, no character has time-traveled. It'll become more clear in future parts, I suppose. The only thing that has time-traveled is information. The lifestream is a 5D entity (hence why it can summon time jannies in the first place and has them disperse across timelines, so that's 5 dimensions total). Sephiroth and JENOVA are in the Lifestream, compromising it. They're able to send information back to present day Sephiroth who can act on it (and the corrupting influence of JENOVA on the lifestream is why Sephiroth can control some of the jannies to some extent). The time jannies also inform Aerith of what's going on because the planet needs her to know what her future HAS to be in order for Sephiroth to be defeated, so she is also aware of her future and the people she will encounter. It's also possible she has info from her future self being in the Lifestream.
But no, AC Sephiroth is not running around.
TIME JANNIES DON'T LET THEM MEET NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
He literally isn't. Aeris was the last ancient. He was able to cast Meteor because of the time he spent in the lifestream.
Nice trolling, but I'll answer seriously for everyone else in the thread.
Jenova is an parastici virus-like alien, and explicitly not a Cetra/Ancient. Sephiroth, using her power, is able to call Meteor because they absorbed the knowledge of the Ancients through the lifestream.
Ifalna describes Jenova explicitlcy in Icicle Inn.
It can be assumed that the original meteor was most likely another planet that Jenova was "riding" as Sephiroth likes to put it. Most likely just a much smaller planet than Gaia.
he's not nuts, his plan is solid
Will Party Sephiroth cuck Aerith or Tifa from Cloud?
but maybe she was summoned by the black materia already in the first place, there are pictures of the meteor in the temple so obviously they are conected
Considering Sephiroth and Aeris were initially planned to be lovers at one point, I'd say her.
Nothing requires Cetra blood to summon Meteor or holy. Holy is a plea to the planet, in which it helps if you happen to speak the planets native tongue
Cloud from both of them.
So you think OG Sephiroth, who at this point is hibernating in crystal and controlling the Jenova parts from a distance, has physically gotten out and met with Cloud's team?
Or that Sephiroth is controlling a Jenova part to do that?
GLORIOSA
GENEROSA
>Or that Sephiroth is controlling a Jenova part to do that?
this, it's always been Sephiroth exerting his will on his clones with parts of JENOVA
You've got me there. His plan is damn good. I mean, he's wrapped up like a smug pepe in materia throughout the entire game and just has cronies do his handiwork. It's fucking brilliant really.
It's possible, but if she was summoned using the black materia -- and the meteor was the same size as the one at the end of the game -- then there would likely be no Gaia for her to dominate.
In the original FFVII Sephiroth is literally never shown in Midgar at any point in the game, and the game's not even about him until after you first escape the city.
>thats how hes presented in the original too
They name drop the guy a few times, but talk about him in past tense until it's revealed he's alive. Then they address who he is.
You don't have the guy show up the whole game in every other cutscene without any context to who he is beyond "I killed your mom and burned down your house".
>When I heard I was the director for Remake, I had just recently been on a binge of watching foreign, independent films. One in particular really inspired me with how we approached [VII's] revised storyline, you might not have heard of it- this little production from 2014, Interstellar?
Or perhaps Holy mitigated much of the impact?
honestly based
>We both leave Midgar scratching our head asking "what is the point?"
This, i'm not in love with this whispers and fate plot line, but i want to see what are they doing with it, i want to bealieve that now that the whispers are dead, they are no longer involved with the story but idk
>Considering Sephiroth and Aeris were initially planned to be lovers at one point
Personally I don't understand why people seem to think that a "real" Sephiroth ever shows up in the REMAKE. Every time we see Sephiroth it seems to be a Jenova Infused Sephiroth Clone. Maybe that last battle? But even then during the last battle you're in some weird alternate 4-D space that transcends time/space or something. Hell, you had to go through a portal to get there.
>Sephiroth
>Having sex
The whole game would fall apart if Sephiroth wasn't a raging, hormonal virgin.
Time jannies would never allow it.
So since this game is 95% filler and Midgar is nowhere near as intricately or "fully realized" as they tried to pawn off, what are the odds the sequelitis are going to be free (for owners of the base game), digital downloads?
