You might not realize this yet, but on the industry level, this game has already changed videogames forever.
Half-Life Alyx
By proving that VR isn't viable.
It really hasn't
thats what out of touch valve developers want to tell themselves. simply not true
Enlighten me how.

*The current input methods for VR are not viable.
I hope so; this industry needs a shake up.
There are things I wish they did differently but it's still a great game that shows VR as a complete thing.
People who don't VR are blown away by it. People who do VR are disappointed. It's too safe, like the training wheels are welded on. After playing Jet Island and Distance, i don't get motion sickness or even any quease at all. Boneworks scratched the itch a bit, but the lack of variety hurt. If Bethesda ripped off Blade & Sorcery's engine they'd have a killer app. Imagine actually climbing in Skyrim and not just playing a faggot stealth archer. Instead you could easily climb scenery and buildings to be a regular stealth archer.
>By proving that VR isn't viable.
this. gaming (real non gimmicky gaming) is improving every day. I think the biggest improvement tech wise in the following years will be new monitors (OLED and new VA with HDR) and raytracing going mainstream
>shows vr as a complete thing
>you can finish it sitting down without moving your arms or legs or head
lol
I only wish you could run in continuous motion mode. I don't think Boneworks style freedom of movement would work with Alyx because of half life's campaigns have a rigid path and you'd find yourself only being able to climb so far before hitting invisible walls and shit.
I wish they could have had fast-but-squishy enemies instead of pushing the whole 'weakpoints' thing. Like Antlions were huge and slow instead of being a swarm you can shot anywhere.
>real gaming
Fucking cringe.
What do you mean? The shitty non-vr mod that doesn't even work without console commands?
I'm only watching walkthroughs but I'm very disappointment by 1) the overall lack of melee, I was expecting you could push zombies away, punch them, use random items to attack etc. maybe even build traps, it all seemed like a natural progression for motion controls 2) good puzzles. the ones in the game are basic as fuck. maybe not Witness level but still. when i saw you could draw on the windows in the beginning, I thought of the ability to draw simple circuits on some board with graphite pen to make stuff work. Overall I think Alyx is a highly polished game but it's NOT a killer app. it didn't really have any new ideas to "make VR happen"
Actually true, I hope to fuck every VR game from now on that doesnt emulate the basic layout of VR control in this game is laughed away.
>OLED
Good luck with eye cancer
bigger gimmick than VR
All to play PS4-like moviegames. Nice improving, pancakes
They had melee but it was cut in testing. I think because people tried to use it too much to save their ammo instead of having fun shooting things. Would have been nice if wielding props did damage to them though.
As for puzzles, some could be better but they worked well as a demonstration of the 3D capabilities of vr. My favorite was the mines because it's so simple but tense.
I can't fucking wait to make maps and weapons for this. First thing I'm going to do is try implementing the psp from smod tactical.
Physics based damage is likely still in engine so I have a hard time imagining a future where modders don't implemented it unless tools are ultragimped
A new generation of headsets with 4k screens will come soon. In 10 years we will have screens that make QLED look like dogshit.
Every other VR game has been too much ambition, not enough polish. HL:A keeps the global systems simple, but that also means they made an actual game with good variety and pacing.
I think that's important and that's going to be a key aspect to building VR games going forward.
StarVR is sounding cool but possibly more expensive than the Index. Cool that more headsets are hopping on the eye tracking train now.
modders have already implemented a buggy crowbar in some custom maps for alyx
Yeah the crowbar is just another physics prop. They have to make it harmless after testers kept trying to hit Eli with it.
Haven't played too many VR games, but some of them have such fucked up basic controls that it's astounding. Played the demo for Compound and the terrible movement smoothing by default makes me feel like I'm a wobbling drunk every time I touch the stick.
Correction. You haven't played ANY vr because you're a poorfag.
Compound dev detected. Turn off that horrible movement smoothing shit, your game is actually playable without it.
valve plays by their own rules because they make a billion dollars per second from steam. so they don't need to ruthlessly monetize their audience and shit up their game just to break even.
honestly the only reason I even play these games is I'm still holding out for half life 3 and when it finally does release and I finish it I can be done with gaming for good
fuck video games. I'm going mountain biking.
>Good luck with eye cancer
???
I'm sure it's some new retarded schizophrenic conspiracy theory shit from people who have no idea how displays work.
