To be fair it is extraordinarily rare for any indie game to blow up as huge as they managed. It's not surprising that they want to ride it out for as long as they can instead of gambling on a new idea paying off too.

Unironically just browse Steam with proper filters. It's not obvious, but under this little button you can go to account settings and filter up to 10 tags to never see them again. Filter stuff like "casual", "puzzle", "memes" and you'll find it much easier to see mid-budget games.
You can also filter "indie" but that's not 100% recommended since there are occasional good games in there.

If you look the game up on youtube, most of the first results look like those spider-man/esla shit, as in intentionally geared toward little kids given unlimited internet access. From what I understand, that's a large and dedicated audience.

Gamedevs who have no prior follow or audience shouldn't be this surprised when their game might not get noticed at all. There are thousands of shovelware indies releasing every single day, you NEED to make yourself stand out, one of the very first steps is to have a good thumbnail, he has a shit one, cant even read the full text in there, looks like nothing in the thumbnail, just some black and white shit.

PLUS, I strongly consider and would even suggest it to others to try and build up a following for themselves BEFORE they release or start working on a game. It's just better that way, you can pitch it the game to your fans and all that, maybe give a few of them the game for free as well, they will spread the word if it's good. I mean, surely if you can go through the hassle of making a video game with your own assets and everything, sure you'd have SOME form or talent that you could put to use to help you gain fans prior to releasing a game.
