Metroid Other M changed gameplay in interesting ways but in the end why tf did we have to use the wiimote sideways and not even have the option to use the nunchuk? Why? Constantly having to point the damn IR port sideways and front back to back just made it harder to aim. Easier to have a single button do the change. The story was pretty bad and they fucked up Samus's monologues making her sound like she was nagging half the time. They also turned Malkovich into an asshole. I can get him being really super serious about his role as a commanding officer and putting the mission above even Samus but in the end I guess he was also a victim of the shit storytelling.

IIRC it was because Sakamoto made it a personal goal to "design a game that could be played with a NES controller".
Missing, of course, that the NES controller is still fine, while the wiimote dpad is not.
