The story of HL3 only was potentially interesting if they had convincing follow ups to what had been put into motion at the end of Episode 2.

Alyx removes the events of Episode 2, thus it destroyed HL3 forever. Might as well have Half-Life: Full-Life Consequences be canon at that rate.

Half Life isn't innovative anymore. HL1 brought the focus on a grounded narrative over arcadey levels (which ruined FPS), HL2 brought the physics and massive technical leap (for the time)

Alyx is every other VR shooter with a HL skin on it. And Valve has made it clear for over a decade that vidya is not their primary concern anymore.

If HL3 comes out, it'll probably just be Alyx 2 rather than a traditional K&M shooter, and it'll be an okay game with a sprinkling of fanservice and a conventional, boring modern vidya narrative.

There's no more reason to be excited for HL3 than if some other slightly outdated modern shooter franchise like FEAR got a sequel.

Yes, it's more grounded than something like Doom, but if you think it's some kind of cinematic experience that just tells me you've never played it, or any other game that came out before you were born.

Seeing what they did with reconning ep2, I would actually see them doing it since it doesn't harm anything. All of the universe is canon because players can choose to make it canon, accept the fan games for episode 3, and go on or accept a universe where gordon got the chance to just go "eh nah not worth it".
