And in case you still have room for yet another podcast of the two-to-four-people-talk-about-games genre (the now defunct) Kotaku Splitscreen (reborn as Triple Click) is a good one. The three hosts are very likeable and know their stuff. They don't really talk about the big scoops that you might expect from Schreier but it's still fun to hear them speculate and knowing that he has inside knowledge.

Carmack and the way he handled id is the best argument for crunch but not to the detriment of the developers.
Quake 1 was made during crunch, it kept the team on their toes and it created what we see today.
Quake 2 was also made during crunch but a much tighter restricted crunch, and we all know how Quake 2 turned out.
Rage is the example of what happens when crunch doesn't occur. Tech evolves faster than the game and by the time it does come out, it is a worse product then if they had a set schedule then ramped up work.

Crunch means devs have less spare time to play TF2, meaning the servers are less populated, so queue times increase and Valve has less incentive to drop the Heavy update
