Is this a good starting point to get into jrpgs? I also never see these shitty waifu threads about this game so that‘s nice. Is the DS version good? Does it have any touchscreen bullshit?
Chrono trigger
i don't know about good to start with, if you like the way it looks i guess? and i played the ds version recently and it was excellent
What would you recommend as a starter? I heard jrpgs are pretty long, so maybe a short one that‘s easy to get into?
Final Fantasy VI
Super Mario RPG
Dragon Quest V
Chrono Trigger
Mother 3 (fan translation)
Any of these would be fine. Chrono Trigger just isn't traditional but it's great.
Honestly, no. Play it last. Nothing else will ever come close since it's the best JRPG of all time. CC fags can take their shit opinions elsewhere.
Go for the SNES version with Uncensored + Bugfixes patch. DS version has inferior audio quality and smaller resolution. PC port is ASS, and if you're on PC you might as well emulate anyways.
Just be warned, Chrono Trigger is so ridiculously good you might actually spoil yourself on JRPGs after that.
Are the final fantasy, dragon quest, mother games standalone or are each of their games connected?
Standalone mostly
Not that user, but I love the way it looks and sounds. I'd the SNES version good as it is, or is there some fuckery I need to know like patches needed or censorship of whatnot?
Hey, look, CT is great and all but don't be making it out to be some sort of flawless masterpiece.
DS version is best, op and it's as good a starting place as any.
Yeah, its a pretty great starting place. FF4-6 would be a more traditional place to start, any of them are worth playing.
The FF and Dragon Quest games are completely stand alone, each game is a completely different setting and cast (at least with FF, dunno about Dragon Quest, haven't played them much).
The Mother series is all in one continuity, but each game is stand alone enough that you don't need to have played the previous installments to enjoy them.
If it‘s just audio then i don‘t mind. I prefer playing native on my 2ds than having to emulate
What are the absolute best games of the dragon quest and final fantasy series? For dragon quest i‘ve seen 8 and 11 be talked about a lot
this is the first jrpg I finished playing because the rest were boring garbage, I couldn't get into FF at all despite trying all of them
after it was DQ5, they both remain my favorite jrpgs
I know that the first three Dragon Quest games are connected continuity-wise but not to the extent that you NEED to play all three of them to get the story at all
Are the gba ports fine?
Is mother 1 worth playing? I only see 2 and 3 being talked about
DS version is dull tiny text. Not as bad when I played it on a XL 3DS though.
Most of the FFs are worth playing honestly.
4 is where the series really took off, 5 has a lighter, more simplistic story than 4 but has one of the best job systems ever in an RPG. 6 was Squeenix at their most polished (though ironically the game is kinda buggy, but not in ways that you'll generally notice) during the SNES era, if you had to play only one FF ever, 6 is a pretty good choice.
FF7 has kinda balls graphics, but it's an early PS1 title so that's to be expected. 8 was one of the more experimental installments combat systems wise. It's pretty love it or hate it, you'll have to decide for yourself. 9 is a throwback to earlier FFs, pretty fuckin solid. 10 is also pretty divisive, but generally considered to be one of the better installments (outside of Yas Forums of course). 12 is considered to have one of the best plots in the franchise, but you'll have to decide whether the MMO lite gameplay works for you. 13 is generally considered skippable. Leaving out 11 and 14 since they are MMOs, but they are by no means bad.
Also consider playing FF Tactics, it's a spinoff but it's amazing
Ignoring all of what I just said, if you want just one FF to be recommended, I guess I would go with 6. It's just all around great.
The other main problem is that the DS version has a different translation which is more accurate to the Japanese, but is more dry and less charming as a result. It's not terrible though, and it does have extra content at least.
FF4 is best on PSP, but good on GBA. 5 is best on GBA. For 6, you want to go with SNES Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition + Bugfixes patch. FF6 had really good graphics which are hurt by an overly bright GBA palette, and the music is mangled harder by the GBA soundchip than 4 and 5's Chrono Trigger DS is perfectly 1:1 with its original soundtrack in comparison. Whatever you do, avoid mobile and PC ports of FF6 like the plague.
The Mother series does connect. 1 and 2 feature the same main villain and visually similar protagonists, and 3 features multiple key characters from EarthBound. 1 is not that good, but it does have a nice atmosphere. 2 is a bit stiff and plays dated even for its time but carries itself with boatloads of charm. 3 is by far the best in terms of gameplay and has slightly better graphics, and arguably the best story. All three games have terrific soundtracks, especially 2 and 3.
If you don't care about the audio, the GBA ports have more content than any other version (that isn't the phone/pc version, but I can't recommend those because they look like absolute ass, it's a mystery what squeenix was thinking), so they would be the definitive versions to go for I suppose. But if you care about audio, stick with the SNES versions (though 5 would be a fan translation, though not a terrible one in that case).
Also Mother 1 is wonky, it's definitely Mother, but it's also pretty dated in that the graphics aren't great and there are random encounters out the wazoo, while Earthbound and Mother 3 have enemies appear on the map to attack you instead. If you can handle the old fashioned roughness, there's some charm to be had, and the final boss of Mother 1 comes back as the final boss, but different in Earthbound, but that isn't something you need to know to enjoy Earthbound and beyond.
This, FFVI, or Secret of Mana are all good starter points.
>What are the absolute best games of the dragon quest and final fantasy series?
For the classic style 2D, DQ V is considered the best by many. For the 3D ones I'm unsure.
Final Fantasy is all over the place. For the classic style ones,
A lot of people love FF4, FF5, and FF6. FF6 is my favorite personally but people like each one for different reasons. I feel FF6 has a more fleshed out world and story, and great pacing.
For the 3D FF's,
FF7 has the biggest reputation,
FF8 can be fun but it's a very broken game,
FF9 is back to FF's roots, but 3D. It's a lot like the classic games but newer. The people who prefer this one tend to feel its incredibly underrated. It's a great game.
FF10 is a great ride but very linear. Its an example of the newer FF's that people tend to shit on, but its actually enjoyable regardless. Despite its focus on linear story telling, people tend to still love this one.
FF11 is an MMO.
FF12 is a weird one, some people adore, some do not. It would take a lot to explain it, but what I will say is it should not be your first JRPG at all.
FF13 has similar issues to FF10 but nothing of value really. It's the sort of game people claim gets good after 10 hours.
FF14 is another MMO
FF15 is what happens when FF follows modern trends of ubisoft style open worlds and slow realism. It's not an awful game per-say just very modern and dull and very mindless.
If you ask the general public they will say FF7 is the best one. FF7 is the Ocarina of Time of FF more or less. First 3D entry, blew a lot of people away, and for what its worth there's a lot to love about it. I still prefer 6 though personally. I think its completely valid to prefer 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 12. Outside of those the quality gap is more objective. Each has flaws though.
If I were to pick one to start with it'd probably be 6 or 7, they're both very accessible. 10 is too but it also falls into some shitty trends.
Though secret of mana is good, I dunno if I'd recommend it for first JRPG, it's pretty different from most available choices.
Thanks, guess i‘ll play 6 first and then the others if i like it
FF4 also had a remake on ds i think but i assume psp version is superior right? For mother i’ll just skip it and read the story online
Yes
The 3d remake of 4 is kinda odd to talk about. It's not bad, but I probably wouldn't recommend it first because it's got some odd design choices. It's also pretty damn hard compared to the other versions of 4. I guess if you are looking for challenge, it's good to go with. But it's also 3DS graphics, so it's not super pretty.
I'd still probably recommend the PSP version since it has fancy sprites.
The only JRPGs you should definitely stay away from, are "Anime" JRPGs. As in, JRPGs that have a clear modern, soulless "Anime" art style and try too hard to follow modern anime tropes and pander to coomer weebs.
Some examples would be
>Xenoblade 2
>Atelier
>Tales of
>Persona
etc
The DS remake is a lot harder than the PSP one. Also, the DS remake has low-poly 3D models, while the PSP version has pretty high-res pixel art. I would say the latter is preferable. The PSP version's lower difficulty is also probably better for a newcomer.
That's a very solid choice, 6 is a great game.
It's great for getting into the genre, but that could be said for any Square or Enix RPG in the Super Nintendo.
DS version is cool, you just get the second screen as a map and menu for combat (which you can tinker with a bit in the Options menu) plus some extra content (avoid the Lost Sanctum). The version most people played tough is the original, so if you want to get into the Woolsey ride, play that one.
>DQ V is considered the best by many.
Should i play ds or snes version? And as for final fantasy 7, i should definitely play the original before the remake right? Is the switch version just a port of the ps1 game?
You should note the original Tales of Phantasia was excellent and came before JRPGs wanted to be anime bullshit. Same with the original Star Ocean.
>tfw we'll never get an official western release of Treasure of Rudra
Man, I loved that game.
Not that I'd recommend it to a new player, it's pretty hard and kinda obtuse at times. Also has gamebreaking bug that can make the game unwinnable if you go to the wrong place at the wrong time
It's a classic, holds up and graphically still looks fairly good (hasn't aged horrible like FFVII).
Play the DS version on emulator for the best experience.
