In one of the many alternate realities of this game universe , like we see at the end their is an infinte amount of realities, one where they failed squall became griever and rinoa ultimecia, one where they won but got split forever, one where everything ends perfectly , one where they never met, etc

It seems like leveling up your GF is more important than leveling your characters (yes I know enemies scale with your level).

leveling your characters actually tends to make the game harder until the enemies cap out at 65 or so
