Might be unfair since DMC paved the way for it and Bayonetta owes its existence to it, but I love it a lot more than any of the DMC games (excluding 5, haven't played it yet). The gameplay feels a lot more fluid, the combos much more varied and pulling them off is always a feast for the eyes, as well as being satisfying as all hell, and Bayonetta herself is also better than Dante and the whole cast combined. The only flaw is that 2 is being held hostage on Switch, the camera can be frustrating as fuck during tricky encounters and the Angel bosses are so dull and are almost exactly the same in terms of their moveset, but other than that it's fantastic in terms of combat and I never had as much fun with a game of this type before or since.
My hot take
Okay, let's unpack this.
I like DMC more but sure, that's fair
After finding that it has a long Space Harrier segment before a challenging boss battle and that you have to repeat said Space Harrier segment after you die I decided to don't bother with Bayonetta at all.
What's the point of even starting a game when it will cuck me out of finishing it?
Like, just get through those segments and replay it for the other parts. Every games has parts you don't like, but as long as they're overshadowed by most of the other ones, I don't personally care.
The segment aint that long nigga. Pretty petty reason to not play a game.
Playing through it on PC now.
Just got to the Space Harrier segment.
Controls seem inconsistent for shooting for some reason.
In what way, exactly? Not sure what you mean.
>Jeanne 4 is behind space harrier
>Space harrier is a good 7-8 minute ride everytime
I legit hate this, I hate this so much
The first game is riddled with a million shitty quicktime events as well as the rocket and motorcycle chapters. The shitty PS3 port brought it down a bit if you had to play it like I did. Other than that it's one of the best game in its genre.
At the missle section the shoot command seems wonky. Sometimes it registers and sometimes it doesn't. It's probably because I'm on a laptop and using a touchpad to try to control it but I don't have other options. I'm just wondering it there's a key to press to shoot instead.
which shoot command? The normal or the missile? The missile needs witch orbs to launch. If it's the shoot I dunno what's up with you
Don't know since I haven't experienced that problem, but have you tried fucking with the controls and changing it to something that would cause your touchpad to fuck with it?
Normal Shoot not the missile.
Probably a problem with my touchpad.
PC options seem to only allow editing the controls for ground combat. Seems for the motorcycle and missile controls you're stuck with the default.
i really dislike bayonetta. its just not as good as DMC is imo
Bayonetta is widely considered the better game.
I don't see what is the hot take here, you probably spent too much time here.
Play DMC5. It’s better than all of Plat’s catalogue and I say that as someone who prefers Bayo to DMC4
>someone who prefers Bayo to DMC4
not a hard thing to do since DMC4 is pretty shit
>Widely
ehhhh. Bayo has issues but in many different aspects, and we're comparing like 6 games against each other.
I don’t have much of an opinion on DMC3 because it’s been an age since I played it and I was not into action games back then.
Is it? I think fans of these sort of games still think of DMC as the king.
It's on my list for when I buy a new PC after people start hiring.
DMC feels so clunky after playing Bayo. Dodge offset is a game changer for me
That’s a weird take; you basically never struggle to get to the end of combo strings in DMC, they’re all short and hardly worth finishing since most of your good moves are input-driven.
What about if I generally dislike the genre, disliked all the DMC games except for 5 which I didn't try, but enjoyed Bayonetta?
>generally dislike the genre
Give it a pass, IDK what you saw in Bayonetta at that point
>generally dislike DMC
DMC5 is the only DMC game I actually love. The rest are very antiquated, mechanically (except DmC but that’s its own mess)
This is my main gripe with DMC games, I hate dodging in them.
The "issues" Bayonetta 1 has are minimum but they do make the game frustrating for your first playthrough.
A lot of that was fixed in 2 though, which is course "worse", but i think the people that complain about Bayo 1 problems as a game ruiner mess with the game enough to see why Bayo 2 is worse.
Wouldn't that be Ninja Gaiden Black?
The problem is that many fans of the genre are just fans of DMC, since those games are far more popular than Bayo or Ninja Gaiden.
Jump. Jumping is your dodge. I learned that lesson so hard I’m still jumping out of the way in Sekiro out of habit.
>IDK what you saw in Bayonetta at that point
I think it's very casual compared to DMC, or at least has very low entry level. DMC was a clunkfest for me, either by my fault or the game's or possibly both.
>The rest are very antiquated,
DMC3 is great with the style switcher and DMC4 is still awesome.
DMC1 is the only one you have to really invest in and I won't lie. It's great when you figure it out but you have to really put the time in
Ninja Gaiden is supposed to be the hardest and I think it's a bit more niche than DMC and Bayo.
I know, but that's my problem. You're much more mobile in Bayo, and you have a dodge. I know DMC gives you one if you select a certain style, but Bayo just did it far better to my liking.
Yeah, that shit doesn't bother me at all but I understand why someone would be put off by it
Honestly though I much prefer how jump works as a dodge than how dodges works in Platinum games
Bayo’s enemies are much more aggressive than DMC’s, I think it’s harder overall until you’re either going for S-rank missions or doing HAH (at which point Pure Plats in Bayo are harder still, since they’re all no-hit runs with tight style AND timing requirements that include a lot of specific backtracking and bonus missions)
Bayo's easier on the surface level and the slow-mo after a perfect dodge helps a ton, but it definitely doesn't hold your hand on the higher difficulties and can get quite nasty.
You’re more mobile in Bayo, that’s true, but DMC is fucking king of air game, and DMC5 cranks that shit to 11.
The combos are more "varied" in a literal sense but it's a dial-a-combo system, rather than building your own combos from various attacks like DMC you have pre-built input strings. And the ranking system highly incentivizes you to use those strings because the combo finishers (wicked weaves) increase the score multiplier. There are some things to mix it up like Tetsuzanko/Heel Stomp but overall the combat is much more focused on score efficiency than creativity. I think The Wonderful 101 is a better compromise of the two styles.
Bayonetta does have some good enemy design like Grace and Glory but it also has enemies that are plain unfun to fight like Fairness/Fearless, Inspired, and Kinship.
I see Bayonetta as less DMC despite the obvious pedigree and allusions, but it feels more like a 3D version of Viewtiful Joe.
>emphasis on slow-mo and powerful retaliation after dodging
>inputs are based off punches and kicks(or hands and feet)
>occasional genre switches and insane size scaling for boss fights
True.
