Where is the game with japanese aesthetics and western writing?

Stuck in the PS2 era.

Not possible. When it comes to a game with a story, he who controls the plot controls the universe. The vision of a story is necessarily centered around the writing. You can't have western writing and Japanese everything else. The Western will sneak in everywhere, even if the writers are weeaboos trying their best not to let it.

The same goes in reverse by the way. Every Japanese game that tries to be "western" is painfully Japanese. Look at Metal Gear for example

>western games
>good writing

really?

>Where is the game with japanese aesthetics and western writing?
Every jRPG by Atlus

*ahem*

compared to garbage anime writing, they are.

Unironically, really

I really wouldn't say it's an east/west problem. There are games like Killer7 and Nier Automata that people jerk off for their writing and there are games like Resident Evil 5 and DMC4 that have an absolutely hideous artstyle.

Then the west has games like dishonored 1 for interesting style and borderlands for vomit-worthy writing.

All games have bad writing. If you want good writing look to or hell even is better off, unironically.

In the wise words of John Carmack
>Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important.

Since Japanese media tends to be more like porn in the sense that simply consuming it is similar to mental masturbation, it has even flimsier stories and flatter characters. But that doesn't mean Western games are some masterpiece either. Vidya writing is generally trash, only TV and comic book/manga writing is worse.

>haha he said fuck that means its good

western writing is not good anymore. Like half of it is just social justice propaganda and woke twitter memes.

You could have just said to yourself "I haven't played that yet" and then Google image searched to find sauce

>he needs good writing

It's near impossible to strike a balance, it's why such instances are few and far between. Say you're writing/designing for a sci-fi game, or even just the most generic high-fantasy premise, regardless of how much you've researched or drafted or whatever, even then you're still not guaranteed to make something that's, at least, not indulgent...and at most, appealing beyond the surface level.

You can't appease everyone and to do so would be stupid. At the same time, to go hard on an idea or perspective but completely shut yourself out to the idea that your idea isn't the only idea, is to have the opposite problem. Why do you think "muh politics" is such an issue nowadays?

Then there's the issue of comedy or even just tone in general, which is a whole other can of worms.

What?

At least we had Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Disco Elysium recently.

That's a cringe from me

It's supposed to be. Notice the Authority check was a failure.

>he cares about writing in cartoons
just read a book faggot, you'll get more out of that

>Japanese games have garbage writing
just because they don't have marvel quips, woke politics, and pickle rick doesn't mean they're "garbage."

John Carmack also thought the best part of his old school games (bhopping and advanced mobility) was stupid, so the man isn't infallible, even if he is smarter than everyone in this thread put together.

But yes, games are better at engagement and immersion than pure narrative. But they're so much better at immersion that nowadays I find myself cringing when a lot of books try to establish mood, because it feels so wrong to try to commit a vague feeling or mood to words when I'm so used to games or film producing them wordlessly, as I feel they should be. Not that books have a choice.

Read a fucking book.

Western games have garbage writing too.
And garbage music

Woke garbage and girl powah ain't good writing.

This wasn't a problem in the 80s and 90s when games didn't have "writing" to begin with.

>16 pointless reddit comments to choose from, most of them being only one word
>setting and characters are unoriginal, licensed from dungeons & dragons
woah....so this....is the power...of western writing....

the 90s were the golden age of crpgs you absolute buffoon

Demon's Souls
Dark Souls
Dark Souls 2
Dark Souls 3
Bloodborne
Sekiro

Anything from this century? That game came out during the fucking Cold War. Post something after Obama

Zork was 1977

Best Western Writing:

Stalker
Disciples 2
Kotor 2
Homeworld

Japanese aesthetics:

Demons souls
Castlevania
Nier Replicant
The Last Story

What do?

...

>posts a pointless reddit comment to decry dialogue options
it's like poetry it rhymes

Problem is people invest their lives into games and expect them all to be some deep journey with a message. What happened to just having fun? Games are escapism. Just watch (older) movies or read books if you want good writing.

Muh nigga

Bro fist and dick clash for Disciples II

Why is fun and good writing contradictory in your peabrain mind?

Name one game with good writing

Look around Finland.

>playing games for the story
Game developers are not writers. I don't expect them to deliver a compelling story. What I expect them to do however is to deliver a fun gaming experience. You storyfags and your obsession with style over substance are one of the many cancers ruining video games.

honestly, i'll take subtle pedophilia over ugly women and shitty social justice plotlines any day.

>what is considered one of the best written japanese games of all time has laughably bad writing compared to some random shovelware western game
let that sink in for a moment

stfu subhuman weeb faggot

John Carmack said this before Half Life came out and got rightfully BTFO'd by it
Outdated quote, stop bringing it up, you and everyone else

Who cares about writing? Read a book nigger.

The dialogue only needs to. Be entertaining. That can be achieved a number of ways, and none of those ways are featured in western games.

>humor
To the west this means Rick and Morty jokes. See meme lands

But japanese games do have garbage art. Its all anime shit, because they are literally incapable of drawing anything that isnt anime.

Is this gonna be one of those threads where a bunch of anons jerk off over their objectively (???) superior taste in writing by listing a bunch of classics they may or may not have even consumed?

It's like the fiction equivalent of those threads where people discuss their favorite snacks and like 6 dudes rush in to be all "WATER"

>Game developers are not writers.
No, that's why the smart ones hire writers.

>You storyfags and your obsession with style over substance are one of the many cancers ruining video games.
Storyfags are as bad as their opposite camp. Video games don't have to be restricted to just being Press X to watch movie or block pushing autism simulators.

yeah as if half-life's story is anything but a device to move the game along

Both are cringe and Kafka is terrible written, nobody likes him not even FF fans.

>503760846
>localisation of Japanese game on limited memory versus rando Western wall-of-text game
The comparison doesn't even work that well because it's still English text versus English text

>Japan
>good art

Its the same trash anime style everywhere only trannies love that art style

I've been saying it for a while. The Evil Within 2 is the perfect blend of American and Japanese game design. It combines Japanese aesthetics with American polish, Japanese difficulty with American freedom, Japanese characterization with American writing. It is not without flaws but it is the only game I can think of that properly captures what's great about both styles.

Never played Lost Odyssey, but it seems to fit the bill.
