Dude, what the fuck. 40k is a fairyland compared to medieval grimdark of FB. In 40k you have places that are nice, you've got Imperium worlds that are decent places, you got Tau's circlejerk, the Orks are a happy lot, there's a modicum of hope in that.
In FB you know 100% how fucked and miserable everyone is. Empire is fucked, Brettonia is fucked, Dwarves are beyond fucked, even Orcs are kinda miserable because unlike in 40k they don't really have the genetic technology hack and they regularly get slaughtered in very unfun ways with no ways to progress beyond their current level at which they stayed for millenia.
Even the whole ridiculously high date thing is explained through constant corrupting influence of Beastmen, Chaos and Skaven not allowing the people of the FB world to progress beyond medieval stuff.

I wish there was a reason to sack with orcs in the early game, those special "buildings" you can leave in the enemy settlements are hilarious, but by the time you get to the parts that reasonable to sack rather than conquer you've already snowballed past needing to sack for money and EXP. At least Azhag is gonna have his Troll Country start soon, I will bring all the poopoo to the fucking Norse and Kislevites. But best of all - shitting in the middle of shiny Elven cities as Grom. Holy shit that's gonna be great.

But that's exactly the opposite of the main difference between 40k and FB.
In 40k there are planets and places that are nice and people living there are relatively happy, roughly on the same level as present day Earth at least. And many worlds in 40k have enough autonomy to kinda do their own thing, Imperium doesn't really give a shit as long as they pay their tithe, send out IG regimens and not worship chaos.
In FB the misery is universal - you've got beastmen prancing around the rural populace, Skaven making city life hell, Vampires sneaking about in noble circles and Chaos infesting all of those.
If you're a Dwarf you got the double trouble of Greenskins always being on the attack and Skaven digging into your cities from underground + your gods being beyond autistic while your rigid social system pushes you into ritual suicide if a girl rejects you. And having to live your life with clear understanding of how beyond fucked your civilisation is.
Don't even get me started on Brettonians, those guys don't even need orcs, beastmen or undead to be miserable, but they also have them running about lmao.
Every aspect of life in FB is poisoned and decaying, even if you look past the supernatual threats it's still a medieval shithole where g*rmans are the premier human civilisation.
And there's nowhere to run.
There's no other planet to retreat to, there's only this one and it's fucked and is somehow getting worse.
That's the most important part for me, it doesn't really matter how many planets a 40k inquisitor blows up, there's always more to come, Imperium controls most of the galaxy and is always colonising new worlds.
The sense of universal decay, hopelessness and existential dread I get from FB is far greater than from 40k personally.

People live and suffer on "micro" perspective. Macro is just statistics. How can one relate to a geopolitical entity's loss of materiel?
Soviet Union lost roughly 30 million people during WW2, majority of those being civilians. It happened in real life and it's just dry numbers until you get down to micro scale and try to relate to experiences of individual people who had to live through that.
Also even on the macro scale FB is absolutely fucked, as I said before, there's nowhere to retreat to, no other planet, no reinforcements arriving just in time from space to save the day, they have what they have, it's very clearly defined and they're losing.
Also 40k had the big Ultraman comeback recently coupled with nu-Space Marines, that was pretty fucking hopeful, even with eye of terror growing and Kadia getting blown up, you get the sense of revival, a sense of progress and the sense that they're fighting back, even with Chaos buffed to account for the big blue man's return.

Fantasy had the fact that the Empire was very slowly learning and moving onward and upwards, while all its enemies where stagnant aside from the Skaven, who were obnoxious author pets anyway. Humanity also had relatively reliable allies, and there was even a hint that innovators such as Thorgrim were doing their best to drag their races out of the shit and back on track. For the average human life is tough, but it’s far from the absolute misery a hive or death world resident would face. Even those living in the border princes can at least eke out a living.
Contrast with 40k, where outside the recent events humanity was the stagnant race with absolutely no reliable allies, and the one innovator race was hopelessly naive and clearly facing an impending warp related raping due to not grasping the nature of it.
Even now you have things like Abaddon reaching the final stages of his crusades, and the Eldar being put right to the top of the usually isolated Ahriman’s shit list
