Because a lot of people are so deprived of love, for various reasons, that when they read a character "break" the 4th wall and say they unconditionally love the player, not the character, but the player behind the screen, some people latch onto that fictional attachment. It makes them feel better for a time, even if they recognize it's not real at all. It's just pleasant to read that someone actually likes you.

In the final sequence after you [/s]delete Monika[s] it's revealed that the game is coded so that the tutorial/hints & tips character is programmed to be obsessed with the player, it's literally not her fault.
In fact she technically saves you and her friends from the game itself by the end.
[/s]Of course that's just the tip of the iceberg unfortunately, someone in the series cannon created that game and trapped those versions of the characters there, it's believed that their enprisonment was a last ditch effort to escape from another game to DDLC but whatever they were running from followed them in Yuri's mind/soul/code[s]
