I've seen it once as a teenager, once in college, and once as an adult.

Late 90s trash like FF7 and MGS are zoomer magnets.

The ideas behind it are very clever and it's one of the only works of fiction to accurately depict internet culture, but the way the story is told is unnecessarily convoluted and vague, and you pretty much have to watch the entire thing twice to make sense of it. The ending is also kind of stupid.
It's basically the anime equivalent of a Suda51 game. Good idea, clunky execution, and a flagrant disregard for whether the audience knows what the fuck is going on.

Evangelion is better

Lain is great but also absolute bait for "what's an avatar that will make look smart and mysterious" types. They also probably use the codec as their message tone and have a brand of sacrifice tattoo.

Or not because they tend to hate any and all types of body modification.
