Bloodborne > Sekiro

I know I'm only at the beginning but I just beat lady butterfly and the blazing bull and it doesn't feel like I'm getting better at all. Feels more like I'm just banging my head against the wall until I eventually get a lucky run.

They play very differently.
As much as they say Bloodborne encourages aggressiveness, in reality the best tactic is to wait for an opening and attack. On the other hand, in Sekiro waiting isn't a good option unless you want to make the fights longer for some reason.

They're both about equal to me.
You will get used to it by the end. Sekiro has a really strange flow to its combat, but it's like a rhythmic dance once you get it down. I started my NG+5 playthrough last night, actually, and didn't actually die until I got a decent chunk in - I'd say close to 40% through.

43 seconds in hits different youtube.com/watch?v=OJ2wy0rHJ5s

The base game isn't that hard, but it's advised to find the best tool for the situation. Experimenting is usually enough.
You also have to keep in mind that spamming block makes it harder to deflect, and deflecting is a way to deal damage in this game. However, blocking is still a better option than taking a hit so it's best to study the timings a little rather than trying to be the parry master.

How'd they go from DS3 to Sekiro? I don't hate DS3, but I think it's probably my least-favorite of all the Souls games. On the other hand, Sekiro is probably one of my favorite games of all time, and I still think that on my sixth playthrough.

I've just started playing it now (about to fight E-Honda). Is this supposed to feel like a stealth game?

It's an action game. Stealth is just a method to choose how you initiate the inevitable fights.
>E Honda
Are you referring to Juzou? That's not really "just started", unless you've been going really quickly.

The did the same thing with a certain doctor's theme
Plays halfway twice, when the best part is the second half

The other games let you kindle bonfires or overlevel for easy mode. Stealth is this game's solution to easy mode

When does Emma's theme play for a 2nd time? I know it plays in the intro cutscene

>be me
>first time playing through both Sekiro and Bloodborne
>between my frustration with not getting the parry timing in Sekiro, and the fact that I Like the setting and world better in Bloodborne, start progressing a lot faster in BL
>get to Genichiro in Sekiro, and have 4 bosses left in Bloodborne (including all the optional bosses and the DLC)
>Try killing Genichiro today several times, again not even close. Try killing Lawrence the first Vicar, and it takes me a few tries, but i finally kill him

the only thing that needs to get restored is my anus because it's devastated by this game. I just don't get it. I have pretty good reflexes IRL, and even did some boxing when I was younger and wasn't terrible at it, but the parry mechanic in Sekiro is just something I fail to grasp. I just do not get the timing right consistently.

I have never been filtered by a game, but sometimes I think this might be it, guys. I haven't given up yet, so it doesn't count, though.

and I have practiced. I practice with regular bad guys. I practice with the purple ninja guys in Hirata estate... and I just don't see any consistent progress.

Meanwhile I showed the game to a friend of mine and he immediately had the parry mechanic down flawlessly. I asked him how the hell he's so good if he's never played it (he hates Dark Souls and Bloodborne cause he thinks they're "Punishing Bossfights: The Game", but he actually seemed to enjoy Sekiro), he said it's cause he plays Street Fighter 4 and 5 competitively, and is used to blocking that way.

I don't get it. If you can gun parry in BB how can you not parry in Sekiro?

For Genichiro, try to push him near a wall and keep harassing him. If he starts his combo just back away. Recover your posture by holding the LB button. You don't need to use the joystick to do a mikiri, just press the button when he does a thrust attack.

Genichiro is such an amazing boss. You'll get him eventually. He's like a tutorial for all of the game's mechanics (Mikiri Counter, jumping sweeps, lightning reversal, deflect chains).
He's tied with Great Shinobi and Guardian Ape for the best fights in the game. You'll get him eventually, user. Just slow down. Sekiro is a fast game, but it's easier if you play it slowly. Don't mash the deflect button. Time it exactly when the attack will hit. Recognize the tells.
Bloodborne and Sekiro are modern From's best games, in my opinion. They're both near-perfect. I think Sekiro is honestly better than Bloodborne as a game, but Bloodborne's world and story are more appealing.

Still wish we got single player DLC. Tomoe lore stuff would have been cool

neither SF4 nor SFV have parries or just defending, though. SFV has certain characters with parries, but it's not a universal mechanic.
Sekiro's combat is reminiscent of a fighting game in a lot of ways, though. Just try and play more patiently and make sure you recognize the Perilous Attacks and counter appropriately. Every Perilous Attack is pretty much free posture damage for you.

Genichiro is my favorite boss fight maybe in all of vidya. I beat him after 2 hours of struggling during the climax of an LSD trip. After that the game just clicked for me and I crushed everybody. also on my first playthrough i beat him without memory beads because i thought they were instant upgrades and only realized I never actually raised my attack power until the first monk fight

>Mikiri Counter, jumping sweeps

those two I got down to a pat. He rarely messes me up with those unless I do something stupid. I haven't even gotten past the first 2 health bars... I can't even consistently take the first health bar away.

It's the deflects that fuck me up, cause one little mistake costs me one or two swigs of the gourd and I only have 5 so I can't afford that during the first health bar.

>neither SF4 nor SFV have parries or just defending, though

No, I know that. But I think the way he, himself blocks in SF is like that: Timing it right on time as he's about to get hit.

>neither SF4 nor SFV have parries or just defending, though

those by themselves are rarely a problem for me. Thrusts, sweeps and that weird grab he does only get me when he's already messed me up with previous hits from the chain of attacks/combo.

Yeah, the drunkard. I'm a few hours in, although I assume I'm supposed to do Hirata Estate pretty early on because I was getting BTFO by the Chained Ogre and one of the merchants mentioned there was a flame weapon there (and the guards mentioned red eyed enemies don't like fire).

It seems like you get completely overwhelmed if you just rush in headfirst and don't pick them off one-by-one first. Plus stealth lets you OHKO most enemies and takes of one of the two deathblows required for the bosses (at least the ones I've faced so far only require two deathblows). Maybe that will change later on when I get some skills/prosthetics that reward agressive play.

Hirata estate is a weird spot you can go back to really whenever you want, I beat it early on but the drunkard with all his adds is a pain in the ass early on

If you're truly stuck, Ashina Castle is the moment Sekiro really opens up. There's four other complete areas you can go to at this point (Valley, Mibu Village, Mt. Kongo, and Hirata Estate).
If you're really stuck on Genichiro, maybe go try your luck at any of those areas and just loop back around to him when you're more comfortable. Learning deflect timing is all about slowing down and just recognizing the pattern.
I just never really do Hirata the minute it's available. I always wait til I'm a little bit deeper in.

the guardian ape fight was too long. if it was about 24% shorter it would have been fucking fantastic.

I wish Sekiro had a Boss Rush mode.

Guardian Ape is really short if you deflect him properly and use the spear to remove the centipede

>spear to remove the centipede
yeah, i really fucked up and missed the spear. so i had to just push through. it ended up being longer than the lady butterfly

Crazy its been more then a year already. I miss Sekiro shame we'll probably never get a sequel.

I didn't know about the spear til my 3rd run through the game, but I still think it's enjoyable. Endurance fights can be fun.

oh for sure. i definitely have been enjoying the game.

tfw you will never get to hear the motifs in this song become a part of the Demon of Hatred's theme

Why is the black mortal blade so oversized compared to the red mortal blade? The red version looks to be a tachi while the black is an odachi from what I see.

The black one's also double edged I believe
