I've often contemplated why Dobson would use a thesaurus in this scenario. The levels of irony in this single panel are something even gods envy. Not only is he saying he'll never understand Final Fantasy, he seems to grasp FF's essential meaning at it's core; Teenagers being profound for profundity's sake. Their fight against gods and men as they barrel through puberty into a world dominated by the last generation. Often, no one understands them, and so they simply say things that don't really mean anything. Much like how Dobson is trying to say he doesnt understand FF, and is using a thesaurus to translate what extremely simply words with very well known definitions mean in this sentence being rattled off by an "emo" teenager. It's as if Dobson, himself, is also saying (or drawing) things that don't really mean anything as an attempt to understand the things in front of him.. a perfect mirror to the core of FF games and their inherent meanings.

Truly, Dobson is a genius of his time. We are not worthy.

It's a genuinely fantastic game with a story and characters more compelling than all but a few video games up to that point, while also setting a new standard in cinematic presentation that even the best console and PC RPGs of the time couldn't match.

The dismissal of it comes entirely from contrarianism. Notice most arguments against it are just "well it's not THAT good" and attacking the reception to it rather than the actual game.

I don't get how anyone can actually play the game and not get attached to the characters and the adventure you have together. It's like with Mass Effect, or Baldur's Gate 2, or Red Dead Redemption, regardless of the gameplay or jankiness or even the plot in general, how can you not love Barret and Aerith and Red XIII and Cloud? They're so charming and quirky and fun.

I'm convinced, if ANY other Final Fantasy game were largely considered one of the best games ever and as hyped as VII is, VII would be considered the "under appreciated gem" of the series. It's just a great game.

I've always loved this image because it shows what a complete fraud Dobson is. Not just about FF but literally everything. FF7's dialogue wasn't anymore flowery than a standard yugioh episode, yet Dob here implies the characters speak in prose. Even if the dialogue was confusing, why is he reading a thesaurus? The rest of the comic implies he didn't fit in with others because he's lol such a dork, yet he needs to look up words like apple and wine. He knows literally nothing about anything.

The best thing about this to me is that the "Things He Can Do" are all soulless imitations of popular culture and something that actively disgusts people.

Cloud is grumpy and dismissive to the point of it being silly, especially in the remake. I don't see why he is looking in a thesaurus though, because he never really says any big words or difficult to understand sentences.

Isn't the entire point of Smash just being a celebration of videogames? If a character you like gets in, that's great, if not, you can just ignore it since it doesn't affect your favorite character's quality or respective importance to their game or franchise.
