For SoC. Best mod for a first playthrough, Made by some of the original devs to bring the game closer to the original vision of the game.

Yes. They are so good.
No, except the ZRP for the first one. It's very "vanilla" but fixes some obvious bugs which should not be in the game.
Yes. This is the case for practically every series.
>Are they still worth playing?
Yeah. They are massively flawed, unfinished and littered with issues, but there are no other games with atmosphere quite like Stalker games. It's worth experiencing.
>Do you NEED to mod them on a first playthrough
Yes. Zone Reclamation. It's not even so much as a mod as it is unofficial patch collection: no changes in content, just fixing a whole lot of major issues that should have never been in the game to begin with. Anyone who claims you don't need ZR is full of shit.
Outside of the mandatory Zone Reclamation, I would not recommend any other mods for first playthrough.
This is a point of contention with some people, often they'll tell you just to play the base game then mod it while others be like URR GET MISERY AND THIS TEXTURE PACK just take your time.
Games are awesome. Never felt such tangible anxiety playing a vidya.
Of course they are worth playing, you dont need to mod them, everything should be played in release order
