You seek Paleblood for reasons unexplained. You are told to go to the Grand Cathedral by Gilbert but you find out that it is abandoned. You talk to Alfred and he tells you to go to Byrgenwerth. When you arrive at Byrgenwerth Master Willem won't even talk to you and he just hints that you should jump off the cliff. When you do, you arrive at Moonside Lake and meet Rom. You have to attack Rom to progress for reasons unexplained. After that there is zero motivation for what the player has to do. You just do shit because it's a video game.
There is an actual plot in DaS1 and DeS.

Same as every other soulslike, it's got a overarching storyline/plot you can fairly easily assemble the basics of from ambient information, item descriptions, and NPC dialogue. The finer points are left unanswered on purpose in order to create a sense of atmosphere, lack of clarity, and be a bit of a brain tickler to try to peice together as you play

If you can't put together the basic 'story' of any of the souls games, you're literally a 60 IQ monkey. The only difficult/unclear things are the more intricate lore-points and finite elements of the story/background.

Bloodborne actually requires you to put your thinking cap on and have at least a basic understanding of a wide variety of cultures+ some of the big christian concepts and rituals

There is a cycle at the basis of the story just like in the other miyazaki stories but bloodborne doesnt have a hopeful/ bittersweet angle to it. Humans cant accept or comprehend the fact that they arent the center of the universe so they attempt to unify themselves with god (communion) over and over and the only result is that they devolve instead of evolving and succumb completely to their animal side. Then the hunters hunt them
