The game had cheesy moments, and the inclusion of Kingdom Hearts-tier bullshit was gay, but overall, it was a badass experience.
Even minor characters like Leslie and Jessie got tons of character development. The scene where Cloud sees Jessie's dad suffering from Mako poisoning and showing his first signs of sympathy was very powerful. The game is filled with great moments like that. The combat was easy, but still very fun.
Every character also feels unique in battle, and it is wonderful to switch to different characters to unleash abilities.
This was honestly better (imho) than the original FF VII. The original was too ambitious considering the limitations of the time, but this game fully realizes its vision. I take back every bad thing I ever said about Nomura.
9, its very good. In particular, the soundtrack and the game play stick out.

I wasn’t thrilled with ffxv and kh3 was abysmal. But I forgive Nomura a million times over. It’s obvious this is all they’ve been doing. Finally a FF game with good dialogue, English motion of the lips, great voice acting for everyone and everything...it’s taken so long for them to get it right and they really knocked it out of the park.

If it were a stand alone game, I'd give it 9.5. DESU, it's practically all I hoped a FFVII remake would be. It hit all the right marks for me except for the ending. However, this is not a stand alone game. This is part 1 of the remake of FFVII, so it's not completed as it is. While the ending can be currently dismissed because it's just "the last hour of the game" and it "doesn't sour the experience", remember that there are more parts to come. That ending will define how the next parts play out. And depending on where they go from here, it could stay a 9.5, but it could drop down to 5-6. They could make a Last Jedi out of this shit yet. So as any sensible person with a brain would do, I will wait until all parts are out so I may judge them as a whole.
Even on my first (and only) playthrough, FFVII never quite grabbed me. I only really finished it out of obligation.
It was the first game I ever played to use ATB, and because its combat is barebones as shit and kinda blows, I thought I just hated ATB until I played Chrono Trigger.
Also a lot of the maps are confusingly laid out and it's hard to tell where you can actually walk or which mess of pixels is the exit. There should have never been a need for the Select button to highlight the exits for you. That's almost an admission of bad visual design.
And the minigames sucked. Fort Condor can eat shit and die, I hope they cut it from Remake.
