Stats no longer tie to characters (but you can re-enable this if you wish) or vehicle parts, you just have preset stat distributions you can choose from. This is a quirk from old kart racers that is tired and needs to die, CTR benefited a lot from dropping it.

Which ice track? It doesn't happen on Blizzard Beach or Polar Pass. Barin Ruins and Meteor Gorge don't have any spots where you can do this. Gingerbread Joyride has some fences you have to hop over on a shortcut, but you get considered out of bounds if you don't make the shortcut.

polar pass, right at the end of the lap there's a large jump with a short brick wall to the left, if you so much as touch the top of that it counts as OOB and in some rare cases you'll fall straight through into the void.

Mario Kart used to allow for this sort of thing. The issue is that they don't want there to be a huge skill gap in the online playerbase like there was for 7 and Wii. Mario Kart has been slowly gearing itself towards casuals since they removed slip canceling in double dash.

I didn't play the Wii U version of MK8, but going into the Switch version, I felt like there wasn't much of a carrot on a stick to play. Like, all the characters are there. All the tracks are there. Everything's there except some kart customizations, and that felt weirdly empty. I'm sure it's great for people who just want to jump in and play, but I dunno. There's a reason unlockables exist in games. It feels good.

there's no such thing as "taking up slots", a character select screen in any game is completely arbitrary and always designed around how many characters there are, you don't design a CSS and then decide what characters to put in each "slot" - that would make no fucking sense.

yeah that part, iirc they actually added that as opposed to the original. maybe they felt it ruined the pace or offered a broken benefit or something, because on most tracks you can practically sequence break or jump through setpieces to shave time off.

That's a poor design choice with pretty much all the fences in the game. The same issue is in Gingerbread Joyride and Spyro Circuit. Basically what they did is consider the tops of fences to be OOB instead of something you can ride along. I think they did this in Papu Pyramid as well to prevent severe sequence breaking.

it sticks out like a sore thumb as there's other tracks with similar thin walls like that which you can race on, but for whatever reason that one in Polar Pass in a location that'd be ideal for a little shortcut to shave off time before the finish, it just doesn't fucking work. You have to actively avoid it, if anything. Anyhow, this is the same problem that is seen in the MK8 webm posted earlier. It's an issue in both games.

Give characters their own unique item abilities like in DD/Tour
More tracks from the locales of Wario/Yoshi/DK/Luigi/etc. games. There’s so much material they could use that they neglect.
