On a scale from 1 to 10 how bad will Capcom fuck up the RE4 remake?
For me it's a solid 7. I don't think the new serious ultra-realistic look of the RE2 and 3 remakes fits RE4 at all, and I don't think they'll change that.
Also RE4 simply doesn't function without being silly. The game only works under the "it's a stupid B-movie just roll with it" premise. If Capcom doesn't keep that intact the whole thing falls apart.

The remake is going to be an ok game, but it won't be able to touch the original.
The problem with remaking RE4 is that what makes RE4 is good is not some 1 obvious thing, it's all the attention to detail and how just fucking insanely well designed the game is as a whole. Even when RE5 tried to copy RE4 almost beat for beat it still couldn't capture that magic that made RE4 work so well.
RE4 is very much a Shinji Mikami creation, it is a pretty straight forward third person shooter, but it's also so much more; it's so clearly infused with his brilliance and other Capcom devs at their A game.

I played the first disc of RE4 about a year ago, but couldn't play the second because I was at my parents home where the internet was too shitty to download it. I did eventually download the ROM but never got back into the game.
I want to play it, but I'm unsure whether or not I should just start over from the beginning of disc 1 or try and jump back where I left off more than a year ago in disc 2.

The remake, since it will have the same point of view as the original, will be measurably worse; unlike the last two remakes that got a free pass for being so different from their source material.
I would also give it a 7. They'll screw up the fun cheese in favor of unintentional melodrama. They'll cut out massive portions of the game, 50/50 on whether they're the right ones to cut.
In terms of gameplay mechanics, your guess is as good as mine. If they just use what they have right now it will be shit, but they'll probably have enough sense to work of off RE4.
