It's disappointing to think after Adventure 2 story took. Back seat to gameplay and in some instances was just an excuse to drag characters into the same levels and into mediocre boss fights.

I would disagree I think after Shadow and 06 is when serious story took a backseat. Unleashed did have a good story but it wasn't like the adventure era. If they continued with stories like Unleashed I don't think many people would be complaining about needing better stories in Sonic games.
