I know you meant video games but it has actually had more of an impact on D&D than anything else. Nearly every online campaign I've played over the past 3-4 years has leveraged Discord for voice chat and organizing campaign resources, scheduling and so on.

I've seen 12 year olds destroy entire communities just because they were lucky enough to make the unofficial community server first.

it's really cool to be able to talk to devs for smaller games though
always used teamspeak ore mumble for games like planetside, never had to buy/host servers myself, discord has a bit better text/non voip; and it's a lot better then skype

That's because hosting files is retardadly easy. Grab a file that's 8MB or lower, and upload, and bam. Easy little centralized message and quick download. You want bigger? Nitro gives you 50 MB.

Nothing has changed about 3rd party game-chat except you don't have to beg people to download a fucking client anymore since it's so ubiquitous.

Instead of adding ACTUAL MATCHMAKING to their game, a feature which by todays standards should be fucking baseline in any sort of co-op multiplayer online game, decided to have all of their group forming for matches be exclusively done through their 'official' discord server.
