it's not overrated, but the difficulty is overstated to the point where it's all anyone focuses on despite it being a minor point

It has simple, yet effective combat. The world is interconnected and offers Metroid-like exploration (at least for the first half of the game before you start having to teleport everywhere). It's relatively hard and there's no easy mode, which means the player is expected to get good at the game to beat it (which is unfortunately rare these days).
