Recommendation threads are a good way to start discussions in a targeted manner. If you just try to start an RTS general thread for example it kinda fizzles. When you have a topic to kick start it it gives people something to work with. That's why rec threads and bait threads always get so many posts. Because you need something to kick off that initial discussion , and talking about the pros and cons of different games al waa says works.
