FFVII only became iconic because it was the first PS1 game that was a sprawling epic with tons of pre-rendered cutscenes hence the three discs. No other console game was like it at the time and the advertising push it as the closest thing videogames would get to a blockbuster film

This is correct. The only reason why it was popular was because of the graphics, it's the only reason why westerners gave a shit about some random ass JRPG in the first place. As soon as all games started to look like the enviroments in ff7, jrpgs fell out of style again.

ACKSHUALLY, it's because the story and script are timeless. That's what creates classic media. The first scenes are immediately recognizable and thematic to the entire game.
